- The two are inmates of a hoarding house run by a landlady with a steam roller character. Nothing stands in the way when it is the rent she is after. And the two boys haven't a cent. But they have cunning and a trick door- a combination which is far better. So when the landlady comes to their door, with an apron pocket stuffed with hills, and knocks peremptorily, the boys open a little trap halfway down on the door. The landlady does not see them, but they see the land lady, and they see the landlady's treasure. When she opens the door, therefore, she is as surprised as a landlady can he to receive her dues. There are two poor girl artists living across the hall, and they, too, are unencumbered by cash. But the boys are rushing their system to death, and recapture their rent as the landlady slams the door. A swift throw across the hall, and again the landlady is stunned by the unusual. The boys thus pay their own rent and that of all their friends in the house, with a roll which does not belong to them, and which is still in their hands afterwards.—Copyright Description from Library of Congress
