Further to the factual mistake regarding the tsunami and the ocean liner. The tsunami wave itself is underwater until the wave reaches a continental shelf. The water "piles up" which results in the visible wave. The larger the quake, the closer to shore, the bigger the wave will be. It's doubtful that the wave which started in California and hit Hawaii would have been quite as big as shown in the movie given the distance between the California mainland and Hawaii.
