This Tepid Canadian "Comedy" Should Just Die Already
buckshottrainer11 January 2020
And I say "comedy" in quotes because we're really stretching here. Katie Uhlmann and Trish Rainone are at it again, to the chagrin of many I'm sure...but here we go! Alright! Season 2! Hopefully they've learned a thing or two from season one and fixed the writing...

Of COURSE they haven't.

Attempting a second season of a mildly-humours online comedy series takes a lot of guts, considering the first season fell flat on so many levels. Katie Uhlmann gives another go at the reigns as director; a decent attempt, although she didn't really have much to work with. The script is still terrible and the actors' performances-yes, the most "professional, weathered, seasoned" we get in Canada who haven't moved south yet-were a smidge better than what I've seen from performances by teenagers in high school plays. These are union actors (who pay ACTRA dues) and they're NO BETTER than many of their non-union counterparts! (Maybe a topic for another discussion.) This may be forgivable if the episodic structure was more conducive to building dramatic tension. Why are there no cliffhangers at the end of the episodes?

I think it's time to give up...move on...to something new and original. Maybe comedy just isn't your thing ladies. I thought the funniest part of the whole series was when one of the funeral goers asked, "Why would a lawyer need a roommate?" And that's sad. First and foremost, comedy has to be funny, and MRIAE season 2 is not. And maybe, JUST MAYBE, get a consultant who knows a thing or two about writing story arcs before you spend other people's money to fund another disappointing train wreck that would have been best left in a drawer somewhere in Sault Ste. Marie.

Bland...predictable...nothing new.

As much as I really wanted to like this web series, it just fell flat on its face right from the beginning. Katie Uhlmann's acting was charming enough, but the story seemed like it was just a sketch comedy skit elongated to fill 11 painful episodes (that were only a few minutes in length, but felt like an eternity to watch.) As hard as the two leads tried to hold it together, they couldn't save the series with their acting. The writers need to be fired! (Although I'm sure the actresses also wrote the series, as I understand this is their "baby"…)

If they plan on doing a second season, they should seriously consider hiring a writer.

Offensive & Poor Attempt at Humour
truthhurts201823 January 2018
I want to see more female characters on screen and can't imagine anyone not supporting that - but this is just plain offensive to women everywhere.

There is nothing funny about this series. It is demeaning to women, sex workers, and the fact that two women made this and thought it was a great idea makes me so upset. How about empowering roles and stories about female characters? Did either of these creators even do their research about sex workers before writing this?

WHAT IS THE END GOAL? Did you ask yourselves why this story and why you should tell it? Perhaps if you had taken the time to do this, you wouldn't have created this for the public to see. What's the point of this series? If it's to entertain and make people laugh, I think majority of viewers will agree you did not succeed.

I hope you learn something from this and move forward creating more progressive stories with female characters. This is entire series is just disappointing. I don't want it to stop you from making content in the future, but let's be more smart about it next time - perhaps try having a diverse writers room or surround yourself with diverse story tellers who can help guide you so something like this doesn't happen again.

Yikes...

It's sad to think that women wrote this. It's insultingly stupid. I don't quite understand the comment about Katie's acting. Trish was the star. Katie was painful to listen to, and after 2 episodes I'd had enough and just had to comment on their youtube video. Clearly.. their supporters were none too happy about this and my comment was down voted. I wasn't surprised when I saw the 4/10 average rating here. I'm actually wondering how many 10 star ratings are propping up this 40% score. Because 4/10 is generous. Too generous.

Smart and Full of Laughs

Well-shot with colourful characters and clever writing, Uhlmann and Rainone should be applauded for their efforts with My Roommates an Escort, SEA:2.

Taking scale into account, or the lack of it, this episodic web series delivers an entertaining viewing experience. The acting is strong, particularly Uhlmann and Rainone's depiction of two opposites who become roommates and eventual BFF's in Kesha and Heather.

The screenwriting is simple yet pushes the story forward, and like any good comedy, the exaggeration of circumstances from episode-to-episode keeps the viewer engaged.

Uhlmann's direction is full pf pragmatism, no doubt a by-product of being a seasoned actor with countless hours on various film sets. MRAE Season 2 is a solid, binge-worthy web series with two intelligent, driven women at its helm.

Dare more!

Warning: Spoilers
Way to go. Original, funny, sexy. Great concept that opens to so many narrative possibilities. Bring back the censored episode, please! It was my favourite, it felt so real and the little nudity made it spicy! Go edgy! Dare more, dare to make people feel embarrassed! I'd like to see an irreverent second season, break the "rules"!
