Robert Clarke: Dad

Quotes

  • Randy : Is mom home?

Dad : No she's at some meeting or other.

    Randy : I've should've known.

    [Randy opens the refrigerator]

Randy : Ahh. One thing you can say for mom is she sets a great refrigerator.

Dad : Don't be disrespectful of your mother. And put that back. You're not going to eat anything until we get a few things straight around here.

    Randy : Dad I'm starving.

Dad : That's too bad. Come on in here.

[Then dad and Randy walks into the living room]

  • Dad : Sit down.

[Then Randy walks over to the pool table and plays with the pool balls]

Dad : Well? You've got any explanation?

Randy : Nope, I was waiting to hear yours.

Dad : What's got into you these past few months? You know, I thought if we just left you alone and go away. But, this is the worst. I put you by and thought it would do you any good.

    Randy : It couldn't hurt.

Dad : Just look at the facts. You're a kid from a good home, got everything you want right?

    Randy : Close.

Dad : All around that we trophy winner. Then halfway through the football season something happened. You lost your nerve. And when you started messing up on the football field, that's when you started running around with those creeps.

Randy : Dad they're not creeps!

Dad : Oh! Then what are they?

    Randy : They're my friends.

Dad : Your friends? I don't see any of them out on the football field! Now Randy, it's time you learn there are two types of people in this world. Winners and losers.

    Randy : No kidding!

Dad : Yeah! Do you know what it takes to be a winner? Guts. Do you know what it takes to be a loser? Nothing. Which kind do you think you are?

Randy : Dad come on! What kind of a question is that huh?

Dad : Well, are you a winner or a loser?

Randy : Alright have it your way! I'm a loser!

Dad : There you've said it!

[Randy sits down on the couch]

  • Dad : Boy that's a, that's sure a good one on me. My only son, that really reflects on me you know. For into you, you're such a great quarterback. But after that Martinville game. You just quit trying, you went through the motions. Led your team to six defeats. That's how it all started.

Randy : It started way before that.

Dad : Wasting your time with those creeps. Messing around with those flea-bitten nags that have been Caswells. Boy I'm glad I put a stop to that.

Randy : Dad, I love working with the horses.

[Randy's Dad opens the case and grabs the trophy]

Dad : You're too big to be a jockey. You want to end up like Ben Caswell? But he's years older than I am. Taking care of some rich mans nags. Don't tell me you threw away football for that.

    Randy : No.

    Dad : Then why?

Randy : Do you remember the Martins bowl game dad?

Dad : Oh do I remember it. You were fantastic. If you played the rest of the season...

Randy : But we lost that game. Remember?

Dad : Yeah that's right. You did but um. The blocking...

Randy : Dad, It wasn't a blocking! You just remember what you want to that's all! Hit dad after that game, you just brought me here just like this! And for two hours let me have it! Because we lost the game! Dad. Dad I gave everything I had in that game! They were just too good for us!

Dad : You could've beat them! But your team didn't support you!

Randy : Dad I've made it through that game on pure guts but it wasn't enough!

Dad : What do you mean? You've could've been all American! You've could've gone on to play college ball!

Randy : Dad! I'm just not big enough!

Dad : I was smaller than you and that never slowed me down! Do you know what your trouble is Randy? You've got no heart, its heart that makes a man a winner and you should know that Randy! I'm sick and tired of giving you everything and getting nothing in return. You don't care about anybody but yourself!

Randy : You really believe that don't you?

Dad : You bet I do.

Randy : I've got something I want to ask you. Something I've been wondering about.

    Dad : What's that?

[Randy walks over to the trophy case and picks up a trophy]

  • Randy : Dad. Here are your trophies.

Dad : You can't talk to me like that! If nothing else, you're going to show me some respect.

Randy : You want your trophies dad? Here, they're yours. I want every single one of them for you. I never wanted them. I thought that maybe if I won enough, but I'll never win enough. Will I dad?

[Randy walks up to his father with an angry face]

Randy : Take them! I am sick and tired of killing myself to get your approval! Because I'll never get it!

Dad : Randy come back here!

[the dramatic music plays. Randy gives the trophy to his dad, runs out of the house, gets in his cars and drives off]
