Great Look at Direct-to-VHS Process
Making 'Blood Cult' Pioneering Shot on Video Movies (2012)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
This sixty-one minute documentary with director Christopher Lewis is certainly a highly entertaining one as he gives us great details about his first film BLOOD CULT, which is remembered for being the first movie produced for the VHS boom. The success of that film led to Lewis and company making THE RIPPER with Tom Savini and REVENGE, a sequel to their first film.
Lewis is the son of Hollywood legend Loretta Young so he talks about how he was already in the business when he decided to start making these movies. The director goes into great detail about the entire process of how these three films came to be. He discusses the budget on BLOOD CULT and how much money it ended up making, which of course led to future films. He discusses all three productions including the various great times as well as stuff that went wrong. Lewis is really great here as you get a terrific idea of what it was like to be on the set and how everything fell into place.
There are clips from all three movies shown as well as trailers and a bizarre music video made for THE RIPPER. If you're a fan of these straight-to-VHS horror films then this will certainly give you a hands on idea of how everything was done. This includes the production as well as getting to sell the films to the Mom and Pop video stores that are sadly no longer with us.
