When film composer and multi-instrumentalist William Ryan Fritch got the call to work on the new Sundance documentary, “The Battle for Laikipia,” he remembers his first reaction. 20 to 24 cues in two and a half weeks. Wow. But after watching the film, it was a no-brainer. “I’ll figure out the how,” he said.
Co-directed by Daphne Matziaraki and Peter Murimi, “The Battle for Laikipia” follows the story of Indigenous pastoralists — farmers who breed and care for animals in the wildlife conservation haven of Laikipia, Kenya — as they struggle to overcome conflicts with landowners and the impact of colonialism.
“It’s just take-your-breath away, raw, arresting humanity, done so exquisitely well,” says Fritch.
Fritch says his admiration for the film’s crew made it an easy decision to join the sprint to finish the production in time for the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
“I knew they were extraordinarily thoughtful, ethical documentarians,” says Fritch.

The CW has partnered with Canada’s CBC on a new short-form samurai drama starring The Girlfriend Experience’s Emily Piggford.
Warigami is a ten-part series, consisting of ten minute episodes that is a contemporary samurai saga. Wendy Ohata, played by Piggford, has just made three startling realizations: One, she has a twin brother; two, she’s a kami-jin – a descendent of an ancient Japanese people who can turn paper into deadly weapons; and three, there’s a kami-jin warrior hunting her down for reasons she doesn’t understand.
The series is created by Eddie Kim and directed by Jason Lapeyre, who directed Lifetime’s Who Killed Jon Benet?, with showrunner Andrew Allen, who worked on digital drama Rush: Inspired By Battlefield. Kai Bradbury (The Terror), Akiel Julien (The Next Step), Miho Suzuki (Colossal), and David Hewlett (Stargate: Atlantis) also star.
It is produced by First Love Films and distributed by New Form.

Cinema and social commentary collide in entertaining and thought-provoking fashion in “See You Yesterday,” a mix of pop culture and true crime that feels tailor-made for a millennial Netflix audience. Stefon Bristol’s feature debut follows two African American Brooklyn teens as they try to use homemade time machines to undo a fatal police shooting — leading to an unforeseen set of calamitous new problems. With Eden Duncan-Smith’s stellar lead performance overshadowing some tonal uneasiness, the film should prove an appealing at-home option when it arrives on the streaming platform May 17.
Producer Spike Lee helped NYU student Bristol expand his short thesis film into full-length drama with a dynamic, lived-in depiction of East Flatbush that recalls Lee’s “Do the Right Thing.” That’s far from the only movie touchstone in “See You Yesterday,” as Bristol’s story begins with a cameo from “Back to the Future” star Michael J. Fox...

[This piece contains spoilers for "Replay," episode three of The Twilight Zone on CBS All Access.]
With the first two heavily satirical episodes out of the way, The Twilight Zone is showing no signs of stopping its quest to keep up the moral compass of Rod Serling's classic series. With "Replay," which premiered April 11, the series showcases its most serious episode yet as a mother, Nina (Sanaa Lathan), attempts to take her young son, Dorian (Damson Idris), to college but is constantly pursued by a racist cop (Glenn Fleshler).

Jordan Peele is very much the man of the moment in pop culture. His latest movie, Us, is turning out to be as big a phenomenon as his Oscar-winning debut film, Get Out. Both have attracted audiences in droves to original, non-franchise concepts, which the movie industry keeps claiming isn’t possible anymore. His production company is churning out tons of high-profile projects (including another recent Oscar winner, BlacKkKlansman) and he’s gracing magazine covers. Heck, Peele and former comedy partner Keegan-Michael Key have even gotten the biggest laughs of...

The signpost ahead reads “The Twilight Zone,” ushering viewers to a realm that at once feels familiar and yet is almost entirely new. Executive producers Jordan Peele and Simon Kinberg have reimagined Rod Serling’s classic horror/science-fiction/fantasy series from the ‘60s for a whole new generation.
At an event in Hollywood this year, Kinberg revealed why it was the perfect time to bring back the show. “I think the world all of a sudden was in desperate need of ‘The Twilight Zone,’” he said. ‘If you said three, four years ago that like a reality star who had no political experience will be the leader of the free world with access to the nuclear button, you think that’s a crazy ‘Twilight Zone’ episode.”
Kinberg also said that the vision Peele and CBS All Access had meshed with how to tell stories while pushing it to the limits.

The Twilight Zone is one of the most innovative and influential shows in TV history, and anyone attempting to revive it has some mighty huge shoes to fill. But if you could handpick someone to produce a new Twilight Zone, wouldn’t you pick Jordan Peele? The former Key & Peele star has refashioned himself into a masterful horror auteur with Get Out and Us, and his Hitchcockian sense of the eerie and macabre makes him the perfect choice to lead CBS All Access’ The Twilight Zone (debuting Monday, April 1), which proves itself a worthy successor to the original while updating...

“The Twilight Zone” was an idea machine. Led by prolific creator Rod Serling and his adventurous storytelling recruits, the episodic sci-fi anthology delighted and challenged viewers with its active creative ambitions and willingness to embrace taboo topics. But, despite first wrapping in 1964, “The Twilight Zone” didn’t go anywhere. The machine was self-sustaining, inspiring everything from ’80s and early aughts revivals to fresh original series like Fox’s “The X-Files” and HBO’s “Room 104.” Serling’s “dimension of imagination” never closed; just like the weekly episodes kept changing into something new, the series developed fresh for each new generation.
So the excitement surrounding the revived 2019 “Twilight Zone” isn’t really about resurrecting the old show. Sure, the eerie opening music and playful approach to ghastly one-off stories may trigger a touch of nostalgia for some, but what’s driving interest in the third official entry in the franchise is...

The Twilight Zone is an admirable homage to its namesake with sci-fi twists, enjoyable guest stars, and a hit-or-miss satirical message.
This review of The Twilight Zone contains no spoilers.
Any evaluation of Jordan Peele’s The Twilight Zone reboot on CBS All Access is anchored to the question, “Is this version true to the spirit of the classic original?” and for the most part, the answer is yes. Obviously each episode must be taken on its merits, and the four stories that the network provided to journalists for review ranged from spot-on to off-the-mark to somewhere in between. But that’s the risk of any anthology show that contains hits and misses, including Rod Serling’s masterpiece, for which we tend to remember only the best episodes and forgive any duds.
Fortunately, the modern version of The Twilight Zone starts off with a premiere worthy of the show’s name.
