A disappointing ending to the first series
akicork8 June 2022
After the last few episodes, where several issues were handled with emotional subtlety, this was a disappointment. I have to accept that it was not really the scriptwriters' fault: since it was the last episode of the season they had to shoehorn the dramatic requirements for closing out Season 1 and laying the groundwork for Season 2. Apart from somewhat less sensitive scripting than we have come to expect, I have a couple of quibbles. First, the world can see that the US medical system is completely heartless, profit and commercial insurance based, but really?... would any institution (anywhere in the world!!??) hold a student to a decision like that of Reese? She had originally selected pathology as a specialisation but realised that she wants to be treating patients. Overall management principles say that you have to let that employee do what they really want - forcing them by contract into a post they do not match will prove a bad move both for employee and employer. My second quibble (less important) is the execrable quality of the CGI parrot. For "actual reality", you want to see the CGI lizard in the BBC's "Death in Paradise" series, produced on (I suspect) a much lower budget. If they'd just put a little more glint in the eyes, or a little more shine on the feathers... ah well.
