To his horror, Max realizes that he has completely forgotten Shorty Tim's upcoming birthday. What's more, he can't even remember what his little brother wanted for a present. No matter how hard Max tries to remember what he promised to get his brother, he keeps drawing a blank. Meanwhile, back at the garage, the team is planning a birthday party for its youngest member. But Malitas spoils the surprise, arriving at the most inopportune moment, as he always does, with yet another "ingenious" invention in tow. This time, the villain has built a ball of lightning contraption to home in on the local power station and destroy it, plunging the entire area into darkness. The Defenders face off with the villainous gang, only to fall into a trap. It is Shorty who manages to save the power station from destruction. For the first time ever, he takes over the reins of the spacecraft and guides the dangerous ball of lightning away into open space. Later, Max learns - much to his relief - that a chance to pilot the spacecraft had in fact been Tim's cherished desire: the wish which Max had promised his brother he would fulfill for his seventh birthday.

The team has to test the weapon without Max. In the absence of their leader, they end up fighting and get trapped inside soap bubbles, which cannot be destroyed from within. Meanwhile, Max has cleaned his room and learned his lesson: he must never put things off. He comes to his friends' rescue and sets them free. A lucky break saves the team from Malitas' latest trap, of which they were not even aware.
