The game is loosely based on the three part interactive show "Secrets of the Luxor Pyramid" that played at the Luxor Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. The trilogy consisted of In Search of the Obelisk (1993), Luxor Live (1993) and Theater of Time (1993). Game developers Mark Ahlin and Adrian Ropp said in an interview with the Just Adventure website that the original story was too fanciful and confusing to work as a game title, so for instance the Luxor location was moved back to Egypt, and some characters were cut.
A reviewer from the German PC Player magazine complained that the originally extremely high resolution video clips from Douglas Trumbull's "Secrets of the Luxor Pyramid" trilogy were downgraded inside the game to a mere 240x180 pixels, making them almost unwatchable.
