Joan says that an e-mail contains a hidden code about an oil deal. This trick, camouflaging a message within something longer and innocuous, is properly called steganography. A Vigenère cipher (the term Joan uses) is essentially a more complicated version of a Caesar cipher. The material to be hidden might well be encrypted, by Vigenère or some other method, but Joan's speech confuses the two layers of concealment.
