An Excellent Film!

This documentary was a game changer for me in terms of the social science around recovery and rehabilitation for people who have committed sex crimes. I am a mental health professional and now recognize the false assumptions which permeate the field. It is an uncomfortable film to watch, yet all of the characters are compelling; you want to know their story. It is a film that illuminates the humanity on both sides of the issue and calls for change that just seems to make sense.

One of the best documentaries I have ever seen
jennifer-0979216 January 2019
This movie is difficult. I won't lie. But it is necessary. It's important. It's crucial. David Feige takes a topic most of us wouldn't think about on a day to day basis and gives it a totally new take. Neither an advocate for the abolition of SORA, nor an advocate for it's strict construction, David Feige pulls back the curtain on what we think we know and shows the very human experiences on both sides of the aisle. It's a searing indictment of a system that is failing and a call for reform but is never heavy handed in its conclusion. Giving stories from both side, David shows that for some the registry is an absolute must but that our sweeping and wide ranging descriptions of what makes a sex offense are reaching a fever pitch and nearly out of control. David does not paint his subjects as victims but rather addresses how their lives have been impacted, not just those on the registry but those who have been victimized as well. It's an incredible piece of film making and one that I will watch again and again to make sure that I remember to be constantly vigilant in the fight for those among us who are considered the least (both the offenders and the victims).

Thought Provoking

Wow. What an amazing subject to bring forward to the public in this very thought provoking and sensitive film. It really made me think about how our laws are made and question the effectiveness of the one-size-fits all approach to punishing sexual misconduct.

Great film

Exposes yet another example of law and policy being made on hate and ignorance. America has a history of creating boogeymen to justify imprisoning or just flat out eliminating people through genocide, war, embargoes, or overthrowing their government. Yes Voyager, facts matter. Flori-duh which has the toughest laws in the land have over 75,000 registered sex offenders second to California with over 100k, keep in mind California is what, 2 or 3 times bigger than Flori-duh. It's estimated 10 to 25 percent of people registered are under 18 the average age being 14 and some states require registration as young as 7. I don't need the government protecting me from 7 year olds. Facts matter, learn some. Your demeanor exposed you, morally outraged people like you supported Jim Crow laws and the internment of Japanese Americans. Learn and let go of your fear and ignorance.

Does not tell the FULL story of Ron and Lauren Book
iamthefallen117 January 2019
I first must mention that I'm actually in this film, albeit briefly, protesting the Book Crime Family in this film. You'll see a similar critique on Amazon.

I was hoping the story of the Anti-Registry Movement would have been told in this film, but instead the film is about the Books. That means challenges to the Books in this film are sugar coated. Why? David Fiege told me face to face that our message was "too harsh." Really? In this film, Ron Book talks about wanting to waterboard us. Yet I was censored for discussing that Ron Book is a twice convicted felon? (Ron Book pled No Contest to Fraud in the 1980s and pleaded guilty to 4 counts of illegal campaign contributions in 1995, yet is still allowed to lobby the state.)

This film could've really cranked up the heat against the Books and their criminal activities, but instead, Feige softballed them. Book is never truly grilled by the filmmakers. Sure, there are arguments against the Book family's practices that forced Miami registrants to live homeless for years, but no one challenges the Books directly. This was the fault of Feige because he catered to the Books. Imagine the supposedly invincible Book family cowering in fear over a small protest of a "dozen people," or as Feige told me, "Skittish AF."

If you want to see the Book Crime Family in action, Google "Ron and Lauren Book: Unplugged and Unhinged." You will find a video of the REAL Books, not the whitewashed stuff you will see in this film. You dropped the ball, David. You punted on first down. This film had potential but at the end of the day, Feige had to cater to the Books rather than tell the full story, and in doing so, you have presented a mediocre project. It is a shame, really. There is a lot of lost potential to show the Book family are the true monsters of Miami. -- Derek
