"Tiny Mammals" is an American English-language live action short film from 2017, so neither really new nor old, and this is the most recent filmmaking effort by writer and director Dagny Looper. This short runs for eight minutes only and can be found on Youtube at this point. If you watch it, maybe you will find some familiar faces also in the cast. This includes mostly the female actors in this one. One actress (the narrator) you may have coma across in a Coen Bros. movie or another of the many many projects she was in. Another was on a really well-received television show and a young cast member played in the new "It" movie not too long ago. So quality is certainly there for a potentially good movie. Sadly the outcome is disappointing. The film certainly goes for the mystery route and it feels as if a supernatural inclusion is even possible at some point, but nothing in the story really backs up the soundtrack and mysterious tone of it all that also partially stems from the narration here and the fog for example. The title is also slightly memorable. So yes I do believe that this could have turned out a quality watch. But the script is just too weak overall for my taste. The film lacks convincing attention to detail, character elaborations that have me on the edge of my seat and just in general a multi-layered story line. Instead it feels rather shallow and for the sake of it trying to cash in on the recent Stranger Things hype without really making a difference by any means. But yeah let me say it again, it's not the actors' fault by any means. This more feels like a segment from a full feature film and as such it could have worked, but as an individual movie it does not in my opinion. Not a failure, but not good enough for a thumbs-up either. Watch something else instead.
