Vin Diesel’s most famous creation, the Fast & Furious franchise has been around since 2001. For over two decades, it has been steadily evolving (or devolving?) from street racing action movies to movies with international espionage, cars going to space, and people being revived every other second — and lost some of its original fans thanks to that. The F&f movies have long lost their original ground.
But according to star Tyrese Gibson, that finally changes with Fast 11!
Fast & Furious Goes Back to Its Roots
Believe it or not, despite the F&f movies having been only getting progressively bigger in terms of scale and events, Fast 11 isn’t about to continue with this trend. The finale of Vin Diesel’s iconic franchise will be more grounded than the previous installments, more down-to-earth — at least, that’s what Tyrese is saying.

Vin Diesel has been a part of a slew of major franchises that have built quite the reputation for the star in the industry. From films like Guardians of the Galaxy to classic blockbusters like the Fast and the Furious franchise, the actor has been a part of some great IP, giving him significant leverage in the industry.

Confirming Tyrese Gibson’s earlier comments, Fast & Furious 11 begins filming in January 2025, director Louis Leterrier says, with its release planned for June the following year.
Given how quiet Universal’s been about the whole production, the original plan to have Fast & Furious 11 in cinemas by April 2025 was sounding increasingly unlikely with each passing day. Backing up Tyrese Gibson’s comments from earlier in the month, director Louis Leterrier has confirmed that the sequel won’t begin filming in January 2025 – which will have an inevitable knock-on effect on its release date.
Talking to Collider, Leterrier said that he wouldn’t even be starting pre-production on Fast 11 until the 16th September this year – the reason being he has another film, a sci-fi horror film called 11817 in the works until the day before.

Vin Diesel is set to enter production on Riddick: Furya, the anticipated fourth installment of the Riddick franchise, on August 26.
Shooting in Germany, Spain and the U.K., this follow-up to the sci-fi films Pitch Black (2000), The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) and Riddick (2013) reunites Diesel with writer-director David Twohy. Diesel reprises his role as the anti-hero Richard B. Riddick, a dangerous escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the galaxy.
In Riddick: Furya, Riddick finally returns to his home world, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.
Diesel will produce for One Race Films, alongside Samantha Vincent. Thorsten Schumacher for Rocket Science and Lars Sylvest for Thank You Studios will also produce alongside Joe Neurauter.

Those that can’t wait for yet another Fast and Furious movie might want to pump the brakes a bit because director Louis Leterrier has announced that it won’t be pulling into theaters until 2026. That said, things will be shifting into high gear later this year as the franchise heads towards the finish line with Fast 11.
Speaking with Collider, Fast 11 director Leterrier teased that “It’s happening. It’s happening very, very soon. I’m able to shoot a little horror movie this summer. I’m finishing my horror movie on September 15th, and I start Fast on September 16th.” This would indicate pre-production, as he added that filming itself would start in early 2025.
Those who have been devoted to the Fast & Furious franchise will note that the intended release year for Fast 11, 2026, will be a special one. As Leterrier clarified and noted, “It’s filming early next year,...

It all started back in 2001, when a car chase action movie was released. Fast forward more than 20 years later, the Fast & Furious franchise is still alive and… relatively well, even after ten feature-length movies, several shorts, and a spin-off television series. And while the most recent installment, Fast X, had a modest run and did not do as well as the previous movies, a standalone sequel is still in the works, as well as a proper sequel, tentatively titled Faxt XI, which is supposedly going to be the final installment in the series as a whole. Whether that is true will be seen, but we do know that the movie has been pushed back to a 2026 release.
While the film did not have a proper release window, it was expected to air much earlier, probably sometime in 2025, but it has now been officially confirmed that the movie is coming...

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for "The Fall Guy."
Don't look now, but Hollywood is going back to its old-school roots with "The Fall Guy." Director David Leitch's throwback blockbuster (reviewed here by /Film's Jacob Hall) not only gives stunt people the overdue celebration that they heartily deserve, but it uses some very tried-and-true methods to do so. Relying almost entirely on the star power of Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt along with the undeniable chemistry sizzling between the two leads, the rom-com masquerading as an action film might as well be shaking audiences by the collar to remind them why we go to the movies in the first place. Although based on a lesser-known television series, this adaptation doesn't resort to the same kinds of gimmicks as typical franchise films.

Series regular Tyrese Gibson says Fast & Furious 11 won’t start filming until early next year, calling its original April 2025 release date into question.
Following the shuddering, $340m ball of fire that was Fast X, it’s been said that the currently untitled sequel we’re calling Fast & Furious 11 will be the last in the franchise. Universal Pictures has previously had that sequel scheduled for release on the 4th April 2025 – a date that now has a huge question mark over it following comments by series regular Tyrese Gibson.
Talking to Cbr, Gibson indicated that Fast & Furious 11, listed on IMDb as Fast X: Part 2, won’t begin filming until January 2025 at the earliest – a knock-on effect, he said, of 2022’s strikes.
“Because of the strike, both strikes, there were some real delays in writing and kind of getting the film up on its feet,” Gibson said. “I’m hearing that we...

From the start, Rodriguez, 21 at the time, saw the blueprint for what would become a lasting career in the glare of the Hollywood mainstream.

In the coming months, British actors’ union Equity and producer trade body Pact are expected to kick off negotiations to thrash out new contracts that will cover the vast majority of U.K. TV and indie film. There’s going to be several major sticking points on the table, many that are near-identical to those that dominated the lengthy and fraught talks between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP in the U.S. last year, not least secondary payments and the hot-button topic of AI.
But while these may be the headline grabbers up for discussion, a group of actors have been campaigning for another issue to be part of the negotiations: hair and makeup equality.
In her 2023 documentary “Untold Stories: Hair on Set,” British actress and filmmaker Fola Evans-Akingbola brought to light how Afro hair had been shockingly overlooked by the U.K. industry in terms of on-set provisions and knowledge.

With the release of Zendaya's "Challengers" behind us, it's just about time to focus on the arrival of the 2024 summer movie season. That begins, in earnest, with the release of Universal's "The Fall Guy" this Friday. After a couple of particularly bad weekends at the box office that the industry can frankly ill afford, all eyes are now on summer to help turn the tide. Like it or not, the summer now has an undue amount of pressure on it as theaters look for films capable of filling seats so they can sell enough popcorn to keep the lights on. Unfortunately, the slate we have before us doesn't seem, on paper, like it can compete with what we had last year. As a result, we're doomed to be disappointed by what unfolds in the coming months.

Carrousel Studios, the newly launched production company of “Lupin” star Omar Sy, “Fast X” director Louis Leterrier and “Gangs of London” producer Thomas Benski, has appointed Cécile Gaget as CEO.
A seasoned executive, the Paris-based Gaget previously worked at Wild Bunch as head of film, and also worked at Anton Capital and Gaumont where she spearheaded international sales and co-productions. While at Gaumont, she worked on many box office hits, notably “Intouchables” which traveled around the world and saw Sy delivering a breakthrough performance.

It's no secret that the first third of 2024 has been at best uneven as far as the box office goes. Ticket sales are lagging way behind this same point in 2023, in no small part thanks to movies like "Abigail" and "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" underperforming on the same weekend. Thankfully, the summer movie season is on the horizon and Hollywood, as well as theater owners, will hinge their hopes on a varied slate being able to sell an outsized number of tickets. That all begins next weekend with the release of Universal's "The Fall Guy." The question is, can Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt strike gold in the summer season once again after last year's Barbenheimer phenomenon?
"The Fall Guy" will be the first blockbuster to hit theaters in May, which typically ushers in the summer for Hollywood. Currently, the big-budget action/comedy is looking at an opening weekend in the $40 million range,...

It was another tumultuous year in Hollywood thanks to the dual labor strikes in 2023, the fallout on the film pipeline and the box office remaining below pre-covid pandemic levels, among other factors.
The positive: The global box office jumped 31 percent to $33.9 billion, led by Barbenheimer. But TV studios’ financials were hit by pressure on these operations across the industry, including fallout from the dual labor disputes. What did all that mean for the studio divisions of Hollywood giants? Overall, only one studio unit among entertainment conglomerates posted profit growth for the calendar year 2023, per The Hollywood Reporter‘s calculations.
Keep in mind that financial disclosures for these units remain limited and are not easily comparable. The names alone vary: Paramount reports figures for its Filmed Entertainment unit, Warner Bros. Discovery and Comcast post results for their Studios divisions, and Sony has its Pictures unit. The businesses included in them differ as well.

Guy Ritchie is back with The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Based on what is allegedly the first “Black Ops” mission it’s a variation on The Dirty Dozen and all the knock-offs that followed, right up to and including Inglourious Basterds.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare opens with a boat having just been boarded by several members of the German Navy. As they pour gasoline over the deck, they tell its occupants they have the choice of staying on board and burning to death, or jumping overboard and drowning. For some reason, however, they don’t seem very worried.
From there we jump back 25 days, to Churchill watching newsreel footage about Hitler’s U-boats keeping American troops from entering the war.

While anime fans still look forward to the third season of One Punch Man, the beloved manga series may now have a future in theaters. Sony’s Columbia Pictures announced a live-action film way back in 2020 and the progress has been really slow on the project. Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner were initially signed on as writers, but the latest reports suggest that Rick and Morty writers Dan Harmon and Heather Anne Campbell are rewriting the script.

Justin Lin is ready to announce his next project, Stakehorse. Is it about a horse made of wooden stakes? Doubtful. Sources say the forthcoming crime thriller is like Ben Affleck’s 2010 banger The Town. After shooting several chapters of the Fast and Furious saga and more, Lin is a clever and creative director with a sleek style all his own. Oscar-winning Japanese animation film “The Boy and the Heron” earned a chart-topping $34.9 million between Friday and Sunday at the mainland China box office. Over its full five-day opening run, it took an even more spectacular $73 million.
China was the last major territory to play the Studio Ghibli-produced fantasy in cinemas – it released in its native Japan in July and is imminently headed to streaming in many other territories – but that did not stop Chinese audiences from lapping it up.
While most films release in China on a Friday, “The Boy and the Heron” was given a Wednesday outing in order to capture momentum from the Thursday-to-Saturday Qingming public holiday.
Consultancy firm Artisan reports that it earned RMB248 million ($34.9 million) over the conventional Friday-to-Sunday weekend. But including some RMB270 million ($38.1 million) of business from Wednesday and Thursday, it set the biggest opening of the year by a non-mainland Chinese movie.

Japanese anime master Hayao Miyazaki is revered in China as much as he is anywhere. The 83-year-old filmmaker’s Oscar-winning swan song The Boy and the Heron opened last Wednesday in China to take advantage of the country’s Qingming public holiday and by Sunday it had earned $73 million — more than its totals in both Japan ($61 million) and North America ($46.6 million).
The Studio Ghibli film easily overtook Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. holdover monster movie Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire, which brought in $36 million over the four-day holiday weekend. Godzilla vs. Kong‘s total now sits at $93.5 million, the biggest haul by a Hollywood movie in China in many months, according to data from Artisan Gateway.
Chinese ticketing app Maoyan currently projects The Boy and the Heron to top out at $106.5 million and Godzilla vs. Kong to finish with $121.9 million — but the company’s estimates are often subject to considerable revision.

A busy holdover weekend for wide studio releases was led by the trio of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Kung Fu Panda 4 and Dune: Part Two. And, in a soaring performance, Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar winner The Boy and the Heron swooped into China helping the market set a new Qingming holiday record.
Meanwhile, Best Picture Oscar winner Oppenheimer, boosted by its release in Japan, has now become Christopher Nolan’s biggest movie ever at the international box office.
Before we dig into all of that, there was also fresh blood in some overseas areas with Disney/20th Century Studios’ The First Omen debuting to $9.1M from 43 markets (about 76% of the offshore landscape and notably not including France and Germany which go next weekend). This is about as expected. The global bow is $17.5M.
Latin America leans in on horror and the prequel performed best in Mexico where it opened No.

The enigmatic Studio Ghibli hit opened in China on Wednesday and soared to $13.7 million (Rmb 99.1 million), nudging aside Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s prior box office champ Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which brought in $5.2 million for the day, according to data from regional consultancy Artisan Gateway.
The Miyazaki masterpiece then set a new record Thursday for the biggest single-day performance ever by a non-Chinese animated film, earning $23.7 million (Rmb 171.5 million). Disney Animation’s Frozen 2 was the former record holder with Rmb 167.6 million in ticket sales Nov. 23, 2019.

Aside from her husband, Christopher Nolan, their children and her mother-in-law, Oscar-winning producer Emma Thomas gave a shout-out to only one other person by name when accepting the Academy Award for best picture for Oppenheimer. “And I want to thank Rich Gelfond at Imax and everyone else at Imax for believing in this movie when it maybe didn’t make much sense to do so,” said Thomas.
For Gelfond, who was in the audience, that moment won’t be forgotten anytime soon and comes as his company witnesses its own atomic explosion, with more moviegoers than ever embracing the Imax and premium large-format (Plf) experience despite an average hefty upcharge of $5 per ticket (in L.A., an Imax seat can run $28). Imax collected a record $1.06 billion in global ticket sales in 2023, led by Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
