Magellan AI, the podcast analytics platform, has partnered with Adelaide, the leader in attention-based media quality measurement, to surface attention metrics within its podcast measurement suite. Through this collaboration, Magellan AI is one of the first podcast intelligence platforms to offer show-level attention ratings by campaign, providing advertisers with critical insights into advertising effectiveness.
Recent coverage in Digiday highlights Adelaide’s advanced approach to measuring media quality in podcast environments using its omnichannel Au metric, which predicts any placement’s probability of attention and impact. Au is generated by a machine-learning model that considers exposure, eye-tracking, and full-funnel outcome data. For podcasts, exposure data falls into categories like genre, ad position, ad load, and ad type.
The addition of Au to Magellan AI’s platform helps advertisers pinpoint the most efficient sources of attention in podcasts, fueling smarter media investment decisions and better outcomes. Au ratings are normalized across channels,...

Sheryl Sandberg is stepping down as chief operating officer at Meta Platforms in the midst of a tumultuous time at the company formerly known as Facebook. She will continue to serve on the board of directors.
The company’s chief growth officer, Javier Olivan, will take over as COO after a transition period. But Mark Zuckerberg said his role will be less sweeping. “I don’t plan to replace Sheryl’s role in our existing structure. I’m not sure that would be possible since she’s a superstar who defined the COO role in her own unique way. But even if it were possible, I think Meta has reached the point where it makes sense for our product and business groups to be more closely integrated, rather than having all the business and operations functions organized separately from our products,” he said in a Facebook post.

Updated with executive comments. Executives at Meta Platforms, formerly known as Facebook, touted mobile video service Reels and the metaverse as two key growth areas after reporting wobbly fourth-quarter results.
Just prior to the call, shares in Meta Platforms plunged in after-hours trading after the company missed Wall Street forecasts for earnings in the quarter ending December 31.
The stock, which has already been under pressure, dropped 19% soon after the numbers hit, with the decline soon reaching a 23% decline, shaving $200 billion from the company’s market value. Shares in Twitter and Snap got hit after the bell as well. Meta rose 1% during the regular trading day to close at $323 a share, on heavier-than-average trading volume.
Earnings per share of $3.67 on a diluted basis fell short of the consensus estimate of $3.85 and slid 5% from the same period a year ago. Revenue of $33.67 billion climbed 20% year-over-year and matched Street views.

No shocker here: For Twitter users, it was a green light for “Squid Game,” the massive global hit that became Netflix’s biggest TV show in its initial release. The Korean drama was the No. 1 most-tweeted about television show of the year.
In the U.S., following “Squid Game” were Disney Plus’ “WandaVision,” “Sesame Street,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Game of Thrones,” according to newly released Twitter data.
Meanwhile, on the movie front, “Black Panther” — the 2018 Marvel film starring the late Chadwick Boseman — was the most-tweeted about title. Note, however, that included tweets about “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” the sequel currently set for Nov. 11, 2022, release. Warner Bros. took the next three spots with “Godzilla vs Kong,” “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” and 2021’s “The Suicide Squad,” followed by Sony/Marvel’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
Twitter released the rankings as part of its year-in-review “#OnlyOnTwitter” report, based on internal company data from Jan.

Instagram and its parent company Facebook have announced a series of changes today that are designed to protect younger users -- including that, going forward, advertisers will only be able to target users under the age of 18 based on their age, gender, and location.
Previously, advertisers on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger could target these users under 18 based on their interests or activities across other apps and websites. The update will be global, Facebook says, and roll out in coming weeks.

During the winter months, or rainy seasons, when storms can knock out electricity, having a good power bank is up there in importance with flashlights, space heaters, and a good emergency kit. Or at least it should be. We rely on our devices for everything in our regular, local, daily lives, and in the middle of a power outage, that goes up exponentially – along with our phone battery usage too.
Being without power puts a significant strain on your device’s battery life: constant internet usage to keep up on weather reports,...

San Francisco, Feb 13 (Ians) Facebook is reportedly working on a smartwatch that will focus on messaging and health features.
Wearers will be able to send messages with Facebook services like Messenger and WhatsApp, and it will work with a cellular connection without a tethered smartphone, reports The Information.
The smartwatch is expected to be feature loaded and would join Facebook's Oculus virtual reality headsets as well as Portal video chat devices as part of the social network's growing hardware ecosystem.
As per the report, Facebook is also working on its own operating system for hardware devices. It is possible that homegrown Os would power future wearables from the company.
Facebook is aiming to start selling its smartwatch next year, with a second-generation planned for as soon as 2023.
The social media giant is planning to sell its upcoming device at close to its production cost, which is also what it does with the Oculus headset.

New Delhi, Feb 8 (Ians) The ban imposed by the Indian Army on the usage of 89 smartphone applications, including social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, since June last year, has been highly successful. Of the 1.3 million strong Indian Army, only eight personnel were found to have violated the ban.
Official sources told Ians that at least 730 Army officers have been authorised to enforce the ban which came into effect last year, on July 15. The apps included 59 Chinese apps banned by the government for general public. But strikingly, the Army also banned the usage of common apps like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Ella, Snapchat, PubG, Messenger, TrueCaller, anti-virus 360 Security, Tinder, Tumbler, Reditt, Hungama, Songs.pk, Cam Scanner, Ok Cupid, Tumbler, Daily Hunt and others. Most of the applications are American and Chinese.

According to a report in TechCrunch, a Facebook spokesperson said late Wednesday that the company was "aware that access to Facebook is currently disrupted for some people".

New Delhi, Jan 28 (Ians) Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has defended the upcoming WhatsApp privacy policy that has witnessed a massive backlash in India, saying that the update does not change the privacy of anyone's messages with friends and family.
The WhatsApp policy has now been put on hold till May 15. It aims to share commercial user data with parent Facebook. The Indian government has also written a letter to WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart to withdraw the policy.
In a quarterly earnings call with analysts on Wednesday, Zuckerberg said that the company has moved the date of this update back to give everyone time to understand what the update means.
"All of these messages are end-to-end encrypted, which means we can't see or hear what you say and we never will, unless the person that you message chooses to share it and business messages will only be hosted on our infrastructure...

Facebook reported strong fourth-quarter financials but spooked markets a bit by warning of advertising headwinds this year — some created by Apple as it mulls stricter privacy controls that could eat into Facebook ad sales.
Revenue was $28.1 billion, up 33%. Net profit hit $11.2 billion, or $3.94 a share, up 53% — both beating Wall Street forecasts. The company cited two broad economic trends — an ongoing shift to online commerce and a shift in consumer demand towards products and away from services.
“We believe these shifts provided a tailwind to our advertising business in the second half of 2020 given our strength in product verticals sold via online commerce and our lower exposure to service verticals like travel. Looking forward, a moderation or reversal in one or both of these trends could serve as a headwind to our advertising revenue growth,” the company said.
Daily active users of 1.84 billion were up 11% year-on-year but about flat from the previous quarter.

New Delhi, Jan 26 (Ians) In a fresh trouble for Facebook, phone numbers of 533 million users are currently being sold via a bot on encrypted messaging platform Telegram, which came from a Facebook vulnerability that was patched by the social network in 2019.
According to a report in Motherboard, the person selling the database full of Facebook users' phone numbers (it's $20 per number) lets customers lookup those numbers by using an automated Telegram bot.
Alon Gal, co-founder and Cto of cybersecurity firm Hudson Rock first alerted about the Telegram bot selling Facebook users' information.
"It is very worrying to see a database of that size being sold in cybercrime communities, it harms our privacy severely and will certainly be used for smishing (the fraudulent practice of sending text messages) and other fraudulent activities by bad actors," Gal was quoted as saying in the report that came out on Monday.

New Delhi, Jan 19 (Ians) As the debate rages over new WhatsApp data sharing policy, another Facebook family product called Messenger does not offer any end-to-end protection and is more prone to data breach, a security expert has claimed, adding that Messenger users should opt for safer apps first.
According to cybersecurity specialist Zak Doffman, we should stop using Facebook Messenger as there is no proper protection of our messages, reports Forbes.
WhatsApp emphasises that it cannot see your private messages, nor listen to your calls, and neither can Facebook.
However, according to Doffman, if you are a Messenger user, you do not have the same data encryption.
"In reality, the WhatsApp debacle has distracted attention away from just how bad Messenger's invasion of your privacy is. There is no justification for it," he wrote in the article.

San Francisco, Jan 2 (Ians) WhatsApp users the world over made more than 1.4 billion voice and video calls on New Year's Eve, the most ever calls in a single day on the platform, Facebook said.
As Covid-19 made meeting with friends and family tough, WhatsApp calling on New Year's Eve 2020 increased over 50 per cent compared to the same day last year, the company said on Friday.
Video calling became arguably the most in-demand feature in 2020 as people turned to technology to stay in touch and get things done in the face of social distancing and stay-at-home mandates.

Facebook on Wednesday was slapped with two antitrust lawsuits, including one from the Federal Trade Commission ordering the social-media giant to divest Instagram and WhatsApp.
“The FTC is seeking a permanent injunction in federal court that could, among other things: require divestitures of assets, including Instagram and WhatsApp; prohibit Facebook from imposing anticompetitive conditions on software developers; and require Facebook to seek prior notice and approval for future mergers and acquisitions,” the FTC said
In addition, Facebook was also hit with a separate antitrust lawsuit from 48 state attorneys general, led by New York’s Letitia James.
The FTC had previously approved Facebook’s 2012 acquisition of Instagram for $1 billion; as well as the company’s $19 billion deal for the popular messaging service WhatsApp two years later.
In its lawsuit, the FTC accuses Facebook of “illegally maintaining its personal social networking monopoly through a years-long course of anticompetitive conduct.”
