- Based on Terry Pratchett's popular Discworld series of fantasy adventure novels. Naïve tourist Twoflower (Sean Astin, "Lord of the Rings") is on holiday in Ankh-Morpork. A fire breaks out, and he flees the city with an incompetent wizard named Rincewind (Sir David Jason, "Hogfather"). The pair sets out on a magical journey, unaware that the Archchancellor of the Unseen University is trying to track them down to recapture a powerful spell in Rincewind's head.
- The Discworld is introduced swimming through space on the back of the Great A'Tuin. On the edge of the Disc, a scientist is sent over the edge of the disk in a small capsule on a rope. The rope breaks and the scientist plummets to his death through space. Back in the City of Krull, scientists debate the sex of the turtle. Over in the bustling city of Ankh-Morpork, an excitable young foreigner sails to the city, beaming excitedly. His name is Twoflower, and he's the Discworld's first tourist. At the Unseen University, wizards are carrying out a funeral for a wizard who had been murdered. One elderly low-level student staggers in and pants, "I'm not late, am I?" The student, named Rincewind, is dismissed by the Archchancellor Galder Weatherwax and an ambitious wizard named Trymon. Rincewind sheepishly shuffles away, accidentally setting off the daggers in the coffin. In the Archchancellor's office, Rincewind is expelled from the Unseen University. He is told that after forty years of training he had not been able to reach level one in wizardry. Rincewind is crushed, but agrees to go. He's told to turn in his hat. He does so at first, but steals it at the last minute. Rincewind's expulsion unsettles the Octavo, the Creator's very own manual. Rincewind is thrown out of the Unseen University with his bags, and leaves, heartbroken. Twoflower arrives in the harbor and meets "Blind" Hugh, a local beggar, who takes him to the Broken Drum. Rincewind tries to take his own life by jumping into the River Ankh, but an empty pallet moves beneath him as he jumps, saving him. As he is lifted back onto the docks, he spots Twoflower's strange walking suitcase and recognizes it as sapient pearwood. He follows the suitcase into the Broken Drum, a somewhat seedy tavern in Ankh-Morpork, and finds that Twoflower seems to be struggling with trying to get across the message that he wants room and board. Rincewind offers his assistance, after seeing the foreigner flash a couple of gold coins to the bartender, and managed to communicate with Twoflower in Trob. He finds to his astonishment that Twoflower speaks fluent Ankh-Morporkean.
