Some of the film was shot in 2013 depicting a younger version of Mason, the main character. The film was shot over the course of 8 years.
Jack Roberts (who plays the lead, Mason) also wrote, directed, starred in, produced and shot parts of the film mostly on weekends in college. He would get out of class Friday afternoon and drive an hour up to New Haven to pick up the actors from the train station before transporting them to the beach house they stayed at while shooting. After a weekend of shooting, he'd drop them off on Monday and resume a full class load and part time job. The film would not be finished for years later after undergoing some re-shoots.
This is the second version of this film. The first version starred Dakota Sawyer as Cash and JEK as Kyla, but scheduling conflicts caused this iteration to fall apart. Shooting the film piecemeal on weekends did not work for the original cast/crew, however the same shoot schedule ended up working for the second cast and crew. A couple of Mason's scenes from the first version made it into the final cut, as Jack Roberts played Mason in both.
The film features a shot of five horseshoe crabs overturned and clawing at the air. This was part of the b-roll shoots in Old Saybrook, CT. The crabs were found and filmed in that natural state due to a recent storm, but the filmmaker was able to save each of the crabs by flipping them over and returning them to the water.
