The plot of this episode was inspired by the prevalence of Craig and Tweek yaoi, anime-style illustrations depicting romantic relationships between male characters typically created by female authors, since the airing of Tweek vs. Craig (1999). The producers of the show requested yaoi-style drawings of Tweek and Craig from viewers which were incorporated into the episode.
The scenes in which Tweek and Craig are alone together are the only instances in which we've seen Tweek appear normal, without the stress and twitches he's usually affected by throughout the series. A clever little detail put in by Matt and Trey to show how Tweek finally can feel safe and relaxed for the first time ever when he's with Craig.
There is a side-mission for collecting yaoi art of Tweek and Craig featured in this episode in the video game South Park: The Fractured But Whole.
The game that Craig and Tweek are playing is Assassin's Creed: Syndicate.
The title "Tweek x Craig" is taken from popular Japanese anime series "Hunter x Hunter" which also has prominent yoai fan art of main characters Gon, Killua, Hisoka and Illumi.
