The lighthouse is a stop-motion black-and-white short set on a magic night, at midnight, during the watch of a lighthouse keeper. I really liked the B&W hues, the lighting, the atmosphere, the sound and background music, and the premises of the story. However, it takes 9 minutes for the story to commence and when it does, the film ends. I think time was wasted setting the mood and the premises of the story, but the proper story was never developed. Where is the lighthouse keeper going? Where does he want to go? why is the magic happening? Is he happy or unhappy in the lighthouse? I expect some of those things to be hinted or explored in a 11-minute short, basically because there are shorts half the length that do just that. Don't take me wrong, the short is well-made, has great visuals and a cute departure, but the story is somewhat interrupted at the wrong time. Without a good story the film doesn't transcend itself. And that is why, precisely, the film didn't do it for me, unfortunately.
