In mid-2014, a pilot episode for an Australian series was filmed on the set of the original UK series, The Chase (2009), which had been rating well in Australia since premiering in a 3:00pm weekday timeslot in August 2013. Seven did not pick up the series at the time, but interest in producing a local version was revived in May 2015 when Seven News began to struggle in the ratings. The series was commissioned in July 2015 as a replacement for Deal or No Deal (2003), which had been repeating episodes for several months, and Million Dollar Minute (2013).
The music and sounds in this series are identical to those in the original UK series, The Chase (2009). The opening titles are also almost identical to the UK version, with the only difference being the inclusion of a rectangle bearing the word AUSTRALIA in the final sequence that reveals the full title.
Like other versions of this series, the Chasers each have nicknames - Brydon Coverdale is "The Shark", Anne Hegerty is "The Governess" (the nickname that she also uses on the UK series), Matt Parkinson is "Goliath" and Issa Schultz is "The Supernerd".
