It's zombie time
Being a huge 'Scooby Doo' fan for goodness knows how long, any new show, special or film would be watched with great anticipation. While 'Scooby Doo Where Are You' is still the jewel of the crown of the franchise, it was interesting to see 'Scooby Doo' rendered in Lego.
'Lego Scooby Doo', as said with the previous episodes, was something found quite by accident after watching the short special 'Knight Time Terror' and the two Lego-rendered 'Scooby Doo' films 'Haunted Hollywood' and 'Blowout Beach Bash'. After being pleasantly surprised by 'Knight Time Terror' and 'Blowout Beach Bash' (was mixed on 'Haunted Hollywood'), it made me interested to see more Lego 'Scooby Doo', having seen other films lately following the Lego animation trend and doing it remarkably well. They are very short episodes, but is quite an interesting little series even if different than expected, being more encounters with monsters with lots of fun and spooky atmosphere rather than a mystery with an unmasking.
"Creaky Creep Out" will effectively give one the creeps and there is nothing creaky about it apart from appropriately the zombies. As with most episodes of 'Lego Scooby Doo', "Creaky Creep Out" should have been longer because it does feel too short (one minute) and on the rushed side with the ending also feeling abrupt. As said with "The Getaway" (the mummy in the museum episode), the series deserves to continue but would be even better with longer lengths and be more mystery oriented.
For atmosphere and fun though, the series is right on point and "Creaky Creep Out" is not an exception. The atmosphere is spooky and fun (in classic 'Scooby Doo' spirit) with an effectively scary zombie and an even creepier tree. It was a shame that Fred, Velma and Daphne were absent but Shaggy and Scooby are so charming and lovable and such strong characters that it didn't matter so much here. Love Shaggy and Scooby's friendship, always have done, it's very affectionate.
Animation-wise, the animation is very nicely done. It's very colourful and atmospheric and the music is dynamic and whimsical with a nice haunted house vibe too with the main theme. Voice acting is good and the dialogue is endearingly goofy and funny (including the "make like a tree" line).
Overall, 'Lego Scooby Doo' has another winner. 8/10 Bethany Cox
