Eminem‘s daughter Hailie Jade Scott has served as the rapper’s muse throughout much of his career, lighting the inner fire that elevated him from a dishwasher on the outskirts of Detroit to one of the biggest musical forces of a generation. More than just motivation, his daughter has provided lyrical inspiration, and even a guest verse or two over the years. Though relations have occasionally been strained between Eminem and Hailie’s mother, Kim Scott—as evidenced in a number of his songs—his bond with Hailie has never wavered.

Eminem‘s latest album Revival was released on Friday, and in it the iconic rapper tackles a variety of tough subjects including politics, heartbreak and his struggle with fame.
They’re topics he’s explored since he first exploded onto the music scene in the late ’90s—the unsettled, manic lyrics mirroring his tumultuous personal life with his on-again-off-again wife, Kim, drug abuse that brought him to the brink of death, and challenges balancing his public persona with his private life as a father.
But the rapper produces perhaps his most emotional work yet when singing about his family. Giving listeners an honest,...

Bram Stoker’s Dracula is a modern horror masterpiece, and one that too often goes overlooked. A film that is horrifying, intriguing, and astoundingly beautiful, Francis Ford Coppola took Stoker’s masterwork and breathed new, undead life into it in 1992. It recently hit its 25th anniversary, and the film remains a classic piece of horror cinema.
The film opens in 1462, with Vlad Dracula (Gary Oldman) returning from war against the Turks to find that his beloved wife, Elisabeta (Winona Ryder) has killed herself upon receiving false news of his defeat and death. When the priest tells him that her soul cannot be saved and will be forever damned by her suicide, Vlad renounces God in a fit of rage. He desecrates his small chapel, stabbing a stone cross and drinking the blood that begins to ebb from it, embracing eternal life and damnation at the hands of a merciless god.

Prince William and Kate Middleton will host Prince Harry and his new fiancée Meghan Markle over the holidays. Though the official royal celebrations will take place at the queen's Sandringham Estate, William and Kate's home of Anmer Hall, which is just a couple of miles east, will be base camp for the younger generation of royals. From here, Meghan will be introduced to the many festive family traditions as she enjoys her first royal Christmas. According to Us Weekly, the royal celebrations will begin with Christmas Eve spent at the queen's Sandringham House. The whole family will attend the 11 a.m. festive service at St. Mary Magdalene Church on Christmas Day and will sit down to Christmas dinner of roast turkey and all the trimmings. It's also tradition (much like in many British homes) to watch the queen's annual Christmas message at 3 p.m. This year, she's expected to congratulate...

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are joined by John Lithgow and Mel Gibson for Daddy's Home 2. Here's our review...
Will Ferrell’s comedy oeuvre has taken us on a strange journey. With as many hits as misses on his resume over the years, he was still once thought of as a dependable presence in otherwise absurd movies. He thrived at a time when over-long, improvised Apatow-era comedies were king, but his star has waned somewhat since that style fell out of favour.
Which brings us to 2015’s Daddy’s Home, which paired Ferrell with reliable scene partner Mark Wahlberg to create a disappointing family comedy that left very little impression after it was done. But it made enough money at the time to warrant a sequel in the studio’s eyes, so here we are.
Daddy’s Home 2 is not worse than the first film, but it’s still not very good.

Dominic Cooper picked up a trick or two from his time on Agent Carter, it seems. Now that his tenure on the Marvel spy series is complete, it is Cooper's turn to play a secret agent in the upcoming action thriller, Stratton, and Et has the first trailer.
From this first look, it's clear Stratton has everything you'd want out of a flick about MI6: the threat of a biological weapon with millions of lives at stake, an accented villain vowing to get his revenge and a spy who has no respect for authority or the chain of command. To which Cooper's Stratton states, "I'm prepared to accept any penalties for violating protocol."

Destiny 2 is developer Bungie’s eagerly anticipated sequel to the highly popular first installment. There has certainly been some hype around Destiny 2 which is clear from the fact that after just one month of sales since its release at the beginning of September, it was already the best-selling game of 2017. As someone who hasn’t played Destiny, I have been excited to see what all the fuss is about.

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

While Nintendo has had a stellar software lineup this year (especially when it comes to the newly launched Nintendo Switch), I was (admittedly) excited when I heard that Mario and Luigi’s RPG debut was going to be receiving an enhanced remake. While many would prefer a brand-new entry in developer AlphaDream’s spin-off series, I was glad to hear that a new generation of gamers would have the chance to experience the game for itself.
Truth be told, I never got to finish the original when it released back in 2003, but Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions serves up the right mix of exploration, action, and story; a sharp contrast from the Paper Mario series, which has undergone some drastic changes over the last five years (and not necessarily to its benefit). And in traditional Nintendo fashion, this remake features a couple of new additions, with the most...

What if Jack London wrote rugged nature tales about his father issues? Filmmakers Alex and Andrew J. Smith's drama is an adaption of a short story from travel writer David Quammen, but you can clearly see the influence – and could easily imagine the Call of the Wild author seeing their male weepie about a son, a stoic dad and the snowy mountains of Montana and silently wiping his manly tears on his flannel shirtsleeves. David (Josh Wiggins) is a city kid going to visit his pops, Cal (Matt Bomer), in big sky country.

Social media has become a window into modern lives, but not an unfiltered one; users curate the way they appear online, often with disingenuous results. It was only a matter of time before the darker side of social media — cyber-stalking, online bullying, and slut-shaming — worked its way into the horror genre. While 2015’s “Unfriended” playfully exposed the double-lives of teenagers (with the majority of the film taking place on a computer screen), “Friend Request” is like unofficial sequel that focuses on the same themes.
But while the film uses social media as a catalyst for murder when a social pariah commits suicide, it does so with much muddier results.
“Friend Request” limits the computer screen activity to an opening montage, which swims through Laura’s (Alycia Debnam-Carey) life via her Facebook feed: photos and videos of parties, dinners and drunken nights out with her friends, congratulatory posts about charity work,...

In mother!, Darren Aronofsky accepts his greatest dare – channeling, and replicating, Lars Von Trier’s stylistic anarchism. Not a tremendous leap given Aronofsky’s cataloged signatures, but layers are thicker and more unhinged this time around (parallels to Emiliano Rocha Minter’s We Are The Flesh). As scenes press on, viewers find themselves imprisoned like Jennifer Lawrence’s housebound queen (possibly Mother Earth?). Always asking questions, but Javier Bardem (possibly God?) – or in our case Aronofsky – offering no answers. Expect an artistic endeavor that’ll either strike a rapturously tragic high or go up in flames of frustration, but either way, be sure to share your immediate reaction with a best friend. It’ll be solid gold.

Many probably don’t know about the man who created Wonder Woman. It’s not a surprise considering the decades it took to finally bring the character to the big screen despite a popularity that rivals her male Justice League counterparts. He wasn’t just some writer cashing in on the superhero craze spawned by a successful run of Superman nor a rags to riches story of an unknown. No, Dr. William Moulton Marston was a psychologist, Harvard PhD, professor, and inventor of the lie detector. He was a feminist, married to his childhood sweetheart and equal both privately and professionally, and developed the concept of Disc Theory—a behavioral assessment tool breaking down human behavior into the four categories of dominance, inducement, submission, and compliance. It’s upon this theory that Wonder Woman stands.

Under less forgiving circumstances, 2017 could have marked a disastrous year for Stephen King adaptations. As is? Andy Muschietti’s It atones for the slog-heavy sins of The Dark Tower, all but erasing Matthew McConaughey’s apron intimidation tactics from cinematic relevance – but approval wasn’t instantaneous. “Pennywise is too scary to lure children!” some cried upon early image releases. “Bill Skarsgård will be a worse clown than Will Poulter!” others claimed. True Detective favorite Cary Fukunaga placed Muschietti behind an 8-Ball the minute he vacated directing duties, but the whimsically sadistic Mama director crumbled under no circumstantial weight. Expectations surpassed, mainstream horror glory returned. What a splendid chill to start the Fall season with.

Humans. Such a savage tribe. Complex beings who view heartwarming triumphs and delusional meltdowns with the same excitement. Life deals a bum hand now and again, which we like to see in our movies – something Janicza Bravo’s Lemon understands. A quirky, deadpan descent into emotional abandonment that tears one man apart day by day. Arthouse to the core, but with detrimental and divisive results. A formula always followed by the same question – “Why?”

No genre illustrates the evolution of cinema better than the crime film. As recently as the ’90s, Hollywood regularly released stories of cops-and-robber showdowns and mystery-thrillers based on best-selling novels — but as the middle class continues to disappear from Hollywood films, smart crime stories moved to television (see: “The Sopranos,” “The Wire,” “Breaking Bad,” “The Night Of,” et. al.).
Outside the studios, there is a longstanding tradition – from the B-movies to the Coen brothers – of new directors showcasing their filmmaking chops with dark, stylish, and intense crime sagas. A surge of new filmmakers in the ’90s brought fresh interpretations to the genre, from the pastiche of “Reservoir Dogs” to the unnerving realism in “Boyz n the Hood.”

With the upcoming release of The Dark Tower and It: Part 1 - The Loser’s Club, we look back at the successes and failures of previous Stephen King film adaptations.
Stephen King published his first novel in 1974. That novel, Carrie, would go on to sell more than a million copies in its first year of publication. The popularity of this book resulted in a movie adaptation two years later. As Stephen King released more novels, his popularity as an author grew, and many more films, miniseries, TV shows, and graphic novels came to be based on his writings. Today, King is one of the most well known and successful modern writers. Although he has written in many genres (including contributions to comic books), he is best known for his horror writings.
58 films have been released so far that have been based at least in some part on the writings of Stephen King.

Mix the insane violence and weaving vignettes of “Pulp Fiction” with the seedy underbelly of “Breaking Bad,” and you have Ryan Prows’ directorial debut, “Lowlife,” a messy but ultimately interesting look a a group of downtrodden individuals who get mixed up in an organ harvesting scheme.
“Lowlife” is broken into four interweaving vignettes that move back and forth through time, slowly revealing different sides to each character, coloring in the story, and tangling them up even tighter into a web of blackmail, deception, kidnapping, and revenge. And the film’s title can certainly be applied to every character in their own right, as each vignette reveals more about their character and the mess they all have found themselves in.

Another D23, a massive Disney fan event, is now behind us. Over the weekend, the Anaheim convention centre was transformed into the ultimate Disney fan HQ with autograph signings by stars, fan photo ops, and all kinds of exclusive merch. Another D23, a massive Disney fan event, is now behind us. Over the weekend, the Anaheim convention centre was transformed into the ultimate Disney fan HQ with autograph signings by stars, fan photo ops, and all kinds of exclusive merch. It’s taken five years for Lucky (Bari Kang) to save the money and find the footing — no matter how much illegal activity both pursuits warranted — necessary to acquire a bride believable enough to fool Ins and earn his green card. He has a legit job as a mechanic with his “brother” Ricky’s (Daniel Jordano) garage during the day, helps “lose” customers’ taxis at night to earn extra cash from a fence while they receive insurance checks, and even procured himself a license from the shady jack-of-all-trades Sunny (Obaid Kadwani) to look the part of a legitimate immigrant before the law renders it official. Finally the time has arrived to take that next step forward just as fate enters to show this kind-hearted soul the irony of his name.

If there is a “Lubitsch tradition” in cinema, it is certainly no longer upheld by commercial directors, who have long since abandoned his roundabout form of visual genius. As everybody who knows the films is aware, familiar situations in Lubitsch play out with a strange density; you might call his approach a kind of evasive clarity, an elongated way of measuredly divining the kernel of a scene. As director, he never ran at things head-on, preferring to skirt around the outsides of the frame, layering innuendo upon innuendo until he arrived at a poetic truth that hovered above the basic constituents of what he was filming. A man revered in his time for crafting the most elegant and crowd-pleasing of Hollywood trifles, his techniques nonetheless find continuity today only in the domain of the structuralist avant-garde. Visual detritus—the leftovers from this artist’s Rube Goldberg narrative machinations—accrues in...

I’ll be the first to admit, I wasn’t entirely impressed when Arms made its initial debut back in January. Like many other anxious Nintendo fans, I was expecting for long-dormant IPs to make a triumphant return, and the last thing on my mind was a new franchise, let alone a fighting game. But I have to give credit where credit is due; ‘the big N’ made a bold decision to release Arms this early into the Switch’s lifecycle, but I have a feeling it will be the right one.
Still, even with Nintendo Directs and Global Testpunches at their disposal, Nintendo has had to fight an uphill battle when it comes to selling Arms to the public. Fighting games are no stranger to Nintendo’s platforms, but as a new IP, Arms can’t win over longtime gamers with a roster crammed full of beloved characters spanning the last three decades.

While walking into the anticipated screening of director Patty Jenkins' film Wonder Woman, two women were walking a few steps in front of me and one of them proudly said, "We finally have a superhero we can call our own." It's a pertinent comment because this Wonder Woman film is a huge step in the right direction for female-fronted superhero films, but also the DC Extended Universe, which has seen a string of disappointing superhero/antihero films, including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad.
Looking at the history of superhero/comic book films provides an even greater depth to the comment made by the two women walking into a predominantly male-driven character genre of film. And when you look at the comic book films that promote a female lead, the results are less than favorable. DC Comics' Supergirl was released in 1984 and starred Helen Slater,...

To say Shadow is just a tad bit emotional about seeing his once dead wife, Laura, sitting up on his motel bed and chatting away would be an understatement.
Rather than ponder how it is she is sitting on his bed, Shadow has more important questions, all of which are regarding her infidelity. Laura goes into detail about how long it took for her to cheat, how long it lasted and what her final moments were like. Shadow listens to every detail, as angering as it is. As the conversation rolls on, the two share a kiss that seems to bring a brief moment of warmth (and a heart beat) to Laura. However, all hopes of a reunion are shot down when Shadow tells Laura he is no longer her Puppy.
Then, Mr. Wednesday knocks at the door and within a minute, police cars pull up and the officers arrest Shadow and Wednesday.

Fatih Akin has had a directorial trajectory that oscillates between the compelling and raw Head-On to the less successful Armenian genocide movie The Cut via the joys of Soul Kitchen. In the Fade sees Akin in his native Hamburg tackling racism and the burgeoning far right extremism.
The film opens with Nuri Sekerci (Numan Acar), wearing a white suit and black shirt reminiscent of Tony Manero, is heading out of his prison cell and into marriage with Katja (Diane Kruger). The jostling and joshing inmates cheering him on his way is a joy. From here we jump ahead a few years and see the two happily ensconced in a beautiful home with a lovely six-year-old son Rocco. Nuri has a legitimate business and Katja is a stay-at-home mum. But when a bomb explodes and kills her family, we wonder how legitimate Nuri was and where all the money came from.

22 episodes is a lot to fill, and the first season of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. arguably fell prey to this network-mandated issue. Acaratus is a tactical turn based strategy game set in a medieval steampunk world from Swedish developer Nodbrim Interactive and has spent four years in development, with one year in early access. Although initially interesting, this is a game that I am not sure will be for everyone. The rather slow pace and storyline make it somewhat underwhelming but it is saved by the fact that as a tactical game it is tough and certainly gets you thinking.
Acaratus’ campaign begins with a short history of the world in which your character, Adina, lives. After a great war known as the Valerian conflict, where soldiers fought in mechanical battle suits, a bit of a crazy emperor takes the throne (classic, it’s always the...

“Harry Potter” tends to bring out the best in people, but there are always a few Slytherins who have to go and ruin it for everyone else. The latest example came just this week, when a short prequel story J.K. Rowling wrote for charity was stolen. Now she and the West Midlands Police are looking for help finding it: “Please don’t buy this if you’re offered it,” Rowling pleaded on Twitter. “Originally auctioned for @englishpen, the owner supported writers’ freedoms by bidding for it.”

There’s no single moment in the creation of the comics that I make that cement the driving feeling of accomplishment more for me than finalizing the lettering on a page. When it comes time to build The Samurnauts, my studio (Unshaven Comics for the uninitiated) subscribes to a combination of the so-called DC Style and the so-called Marvel Method.
The DC Style such as its short-handed via various wikis and whatnot is a full script treatment. This means that the writers produce a script that outlines every bit of information to be in a given comic – from the panel descriptions, to the actual laid out dialogue, caption boxes, and onomatopoeia.
The Marvel Method is often the cited style of the stalwart staple of Marvel Studios, Stan Lee. Stan provided his artist collaborators the basic structures and story beats. He’d allow them to lay it all out as they saw fit.

In a world where TV networks fight for the opportunity to showcase the best nonfiction content that will keep viewers on their couches, the Toronto-based Hot Docs Canadian International Film Festival (April 27 – May 7) is a very, very good place to be.
What began 24 years ago as a modest showcase for Canadian documentaries is now a sprawling international program that screens 230 titles from 58 countries. The festival still favors homegrown product, but also amplifies movies from Sundance (“Chasing Coral,” “Long Strange Trip,” “City of Ghosts”) and Tribeca (“The Departure,” “A River Below”), as well as some international (Joe Berlinger’s “Intent to Destroy”) and world premieres (“A Moon of Nickel and Ice”).

Must Hate Dogs would perhaps be a more fitting title for Lasse Hallström’s peculiar puppy snuff film, A Dog’s Purpose. What other explanation could there be for his decision to allow Josh Gad to gratingly narrate every last shred of affection for our canine chums from cinema-goers’ hearts? A Dog’s Purpose is a schmaltzy mash up of emotional manipulation and kitsch, as one tiny doggy soul wafts from host to host learning inane lessons about humankind and leaving a trail of corpses in its wake.
We open on a snuggly pup, nestled amongst its furry siblings, slowly acclimatising to the sights and sounds of planet earth. We flinch in recognition (and slump in resignation) as we realise that, dear god yes, that is the voice of Frozen’s Olaf trying to sell us on this cutesy, cynically family-friendly feature. But wait, the poor homeless...

‘Thumper’ is an Unmissable and Taut Crime ThrillerBambi is nowhere to be found in this story riddled with poverty, meth and violence.
Thumper opens with a bit of misdirection. We’re drawn into the chaotic and clustered home life of Wyatt (Pablo Schreiber), a charismatic, larger than life figure whom we soon learn looms large in the poverty-stricken, unnamed California neighborhood. With a child on one hip, Wyatt scrambles through empty kitchen cabinets, trying to salvage together breakfast for his two children. The house is messy, littered with toys and mismatched furniture, but Wyatt is the perfect picture of a doting father, showering both children with genuine affection that belies his tattooed shaved head.
But once his children have shuffled off with their mother, we see a different side of Wyatt. When Troy (Grant Harvey) comes into the house, unexpectedly bringing along Beaver (Daniel Webber), Wyatt is outraged and starts menacing the two teenagers. Eventually...

"No one has to die...."
The day has finally arrived. The season seven finale is here. Will Rick and his Survivors go to battle with the Saviors? Do the Saviors know they're coming? How will Negan use Sasha to his advantage? Can Rick and Daryl trust Dwight? Will the Kingdom join the fight?
Here we go...
Off and on throughout the episode, we see close ups of Sasha's face in a dark setting, music blaring through the iPod EarPods in her ears. She seems as if she may be in pain or discomfort. After each close up on her face, the scene cuts to what we perceive is a dream sequence. The dreams focus slightly on her sitting quietly with Maggie, but primarily Sahsa sharing a moment with Abraham back at Alexandria, telling him not to leave and help Maggie. Outside of the dreams, Sahsa is back in her cell.
