In the circus
In 1941 Tex Avery started a series of cartoons 'Speaking of Animals'. These cartoons may not be among the best cartoons there's ever been and those with Avery's involvement are not among the best he's ever done, but they are very interesting and entertaining on the most part with a unique visual style.
'Speaking of Animals in the Circus' to me is one of the best 'Speaking of Animals' cartoons and up to this early point the best since the first 'Speaking of Animals Down on the Farm'. Story-wise it is slight, which is true for the series in general, but the series is not about the stories. It's about the visuals and humour, and 'Speaking of Animals in the Circus' delivers on both and the circus setting helps a lot.
Once again, 'Speaking of Animals in the Circus' has ingenious use of Rotoscoping, with animation being re-shot and matted into the animal footage, and its combining of live action animals and animated mouths similarly looks incredible. It's this that is the shorts', and for the series in general, most striking and notable asset.
Humour-wise, it's one of the series' funniest, with the wildness and wit of 'Speaking of Animals Down on the Farm' making a welcome return after being not quite as strong in the cartoons in between. It really does put the great into the circus setting, and when it comes to the pacing it's one of the livelier 'Speaking of Animals' cartoons too.
The endearing and fun animals are the very definition of crowd-pleasing.
All in all, great and one of the better entries in the 'Speaking of Animals' series. 9/10 Bethany Cox
