Quietly convincing Warning: Spoilers
"Boy" is a Canadian English-language short film from 2015, so this one has its fifth anniversary this year. I personally think, however, that you can also watch this film if you don't speak English (oh wait, you don't understand my review then, right?) because there is not a lot of dialogue in here and also it easy to grasp the atmospheric aspect without understanding a single word. The writer and director is Connor Jessup, who is really prolific in film, not just in making his own movies, but also in acting and all kinds of other areas of production. In my perception, he should keep focusing on making movies as the man in charge behind the camera. This quarter of an hour was certainly good enough to get me curious about upcoming projects. I liked it overall, especially the beginning with the boy rising out of his body and also the end when he lays down "on" another character. It is also not entirely necessary to really understand everything to appreciate the movie. For example, I was not sure if those two were his mother and brother (they seemed unusually close, also physically) or if he even knew them. Judging from the beginning, the main character just died in a bike accident and still there was a gravity to these other two as if they were in mourning, but then again, they could not have known yet what happened. It's not too important though. With the help of a beautiful soundtrack we follow the deceased boy to school and eventually to the house of the other two characters. I quite enjoyed the watch here, although I am not sure if these exact words are a good way to express my feelings while I was watching. I just mean it's a strong creative achievement. This was seen approximately a 100k times on Youtube since it was uploaded and while it is not a bad number, it could be higher for sure, should be higher for sure I'd even say. I hope that maybe my review and recommendation here can get some people to check it out. They definitely won't regret it. It is still a pretty close call to make a choice between this being "only" a good film or a great film, but I will go for the latter. The ending was good enough. I already mentioned what happened there with the boy laying down and it made for really nice closure. I also felt there was a certain innocence to this film overall, especially the moment we see him jump across the street. Or also how he sits on the bike. Let's not get too scientific here with how he can sit there physically as he is just a spirit at that point. Still this movie, despite the innocence, feels pretty bleak and essential at the same time. Nice achievement. The cast is a mix of actors who have been pretty prolific over the years and other actors who have never been in a film before or after this movie, maybe never will be. But it shows that as long as you have a good script and convincing depth, you don't need a super famous cast. In my opinion, Jessup definitely achieved what he was going for her. Big thumbs-up. One of my favorite short films from 2015 for sure and you don't wanna miss out on it. A gem of a film that is certainly on the underseen side.

A dead boy. and his exploration. the mix of delicacy and admirable cinematography. fragments of family life. and the special sensuality of the end. a film about the life of the other. and the death. and the desire becoming fact. sure, with the precise price.
