- A fantasy retelling of the South Tyrolean legend of "King Laurin and his rose garden". Theo, the son of King Dietrich, trains for an upcoming tournament, but lacks the strength and size. Meanwhile his cousin Wittich is raising money to pay a horde of mercenaries and attack the castle of his uncle Dietrich. By a most fortunate chance, Theo befriends the used-to-be King Laurin, a dwarf who was exiled from the kingdom by King Dietrich himself, and who now lives in a cave hidden in the mountains, tending to his plants. With Laurin's magical artifacts and knowledge Theo might be able to win the tournament and save his father's kingdom.—Raudraug
- King Dietrich, who passed over his elder brother as heir to the throne, rules his small Alpine realm grimly, regularly 'conquering' (plundering) petty neighbor principalities. All grew ever poorer since the king banned all dwarfs, fearing their magic, which actually is linked with nature, notably plants. Dietrich grows impatient about his softy nerd son Theo, too small for his age and hopeless with arms, despite private training for knighthood by royal engineer and confident master Hildebrand. Cousin Wittich is Theo's ruthless counterpart, a born knight without conscience, who plots to seize the throne by hiring the Armelites, rogue robbers. Trying to sneakily save an old donkey from slaughter, Theo nearly falls to his death in the mountains, but is saved by dwarf king Laurin, whom he befriends and finds the perfect ally to provide magical help. Together they find and start cultivating the 'first rose', which relaunches nature. Theo overhears his father's bitter despair as his knightly training won't make him a serious contender at the upcoming tournament with a princess's hand at stake, so he 'borrows' Laurin's magical belt, enabling him to defeat Wittich, but the dwarf now turns on him and everything seems to go wrong.—KGF Vissers
