In early November of 2018, Eduardo Ortíz and Jorge Pabón were sued over the screenplay for this film , where the plaintiff accused these gentlemen of plagiarizing a screenplay he had submitted to Mr. Pabón. This got considerably heightened coverage in Puerto Rican news media (and podcasts) due to the plagiarism situation that occurred with Mr Ortiz when his film Vasos De Papel (2016) was released, then almost immediately yanked from movie theaters, in March of 2016.
"Los Domiriquenos" is the most successful Puerto Rican film in the island's film industry history when it comes to ticket sales. The film made well over 3 million dollars in ticket sales, a first for a Puerto Rican film. The film ticket sales are divided as follow: 3 ,200,000 in Puerto Rico and 1,400,00 in the United States.

On July 2016, actor / producer Jorge Pabón announced that a sequel to this film will be shot in 2017. According to Mr. Pabón, it will once again have Eduardo Ortíz in the director's chair.
