Scoring the Escape: A Discussion with Composer Alan Howarth (2015)
*** (out of 4)
Horror's Hallowed Grounds host Sean Clark sits down with ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK co-composer Alan Howarth to discuss the popularity of the score and how it continues to grow. Howarth starts off talking about what his job was on the film and what his working relationship was with Carpenter. From here he talks about Carpenter going on to do THE THING while giving him the script for HALLOWEEN II. From here we learn about the original vinyl release, the CD release and then the special edition vinyl release. Overall this is a pretty good featurette, although it does run a bit too long at 18-minutes. Clark asks some very good questions to help move the piece along and there's no doubt that Howarth has some good answers and stories to share. Fans of the film will certainly enjoy hearing how the score was created and we also get Howarth playing some of it from his studio.
