(Envisioned as a "City Worthy of a Nation", with great democratic institutions, grand public spaces, and elegant city streets. One of the most distinctive cities in America. It has stunning landmarks, some of the most-visited museums in the world, and memorials to Presidents, Wars, and Civic Action. Rebuilt after having most buildings burned to the ground in 1814 by the British. Its location was important since George Washington's decided to place the District of Columbia with easy trade, transportation, and since cost was a factor, could be established on lands donated by Virginia and Maryland. The Virginia lands were forfeited in the 1840's over the Virginia practice of slavery through its city of Alexandria.)
(Home to US Presidents since John Adams moved into the still-unfinished presidential mansion in November, 1800. It serves as both the home and workplace of the president and is the headquarters of the president's principal staff members.)
(Home to the Legislative Branch of the United States Government; it enacts laws, sends them to the President for passage, and has the power to override vetoes. The House of Representatives is re-elected every 2 years, and represents the People of each Congressional District. The Senators hold office for 6 years, and represent the States through equal representation of 2 per state.)
(Memorial in honor of the 16th American President. Other Presidential honors include the Washington Monument, and the Jefferson Memorial.)
(Collection of 19 museums, including the National Museum of Natural History, National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of American History, the National Zoo, other museums with collections of art, national treasures, and famous documents.)
