They need to bring this show back

I understand that Better Call Saul is still airing so Bob doesn't really have time to focus on anything else, but if they do find some they should really produce more seasons of this, it's a great show!!!

Brilliantly awkward satire - a fine show!
msrodriguez024 November 2015
I love this. I was a big fan of Mr. Show in the 90s, so my expectations for Bob & David as comedians and actors come from my experience with Mr. Show and with David's stand up, and not from Breaking Bad or arrested development (although I loved the latter).

This humor may not be for everyone but it really is brilliant! Is there a word for smart, stupid-humor? It's satire at its finest, and the exaggerated acting, weird comedic timing and cheesiness all contribute to a staged and clever feeling of awkwardness. The show stays relevant by making light of hot button political and social issues like racism, sexism, religion, extremism and current events, and with ridiculous humor and crazy scenarios w/ Bob and David makes a statement on how people interact with one another in a way that makes you go "Did they really just do that?"

Anyway, I have to laugh at all the reviews that say "Maybe this is funny if you are American." I think Bob & David would have fun with that sentiment. But I'm American, so what do I know? LOL.

A great return to Mr. Show.

If you only know Bob from Breaking Bad and David from Arrested Development you are clearly not a fan of comedy and have no business reviewing this show.Bob Odenkirk was a writer for SNL, David Letterman and Get a Life. He created Tenacious D and has written, directed, produced and starred in most of Tim and Eric's work and tons of other Adult Swim shows. He is a comedy god and he never even saw Breaking Bad before he was on it(Google it).If you watched this show because of Breaking Bad you're a mental midget who should have his internet privileges suspended. For those who have brains, this show is an awesome reincarnation of Mr. Show. It's sketch comedy for smart people who like to laugh. Most people won't get it because SNL has tricked people into believing that sketch comedy is just supposed to be the same unfunny recurring characters and prerecorded "songs".This show(and Mr. Show) never did lame jokes about politics that make a show almost unwatchable after a few months.Eight-teen years after Mr. Show you can still watch it and not know that it's old. This show will be the same way.A true timeless comedy classic. If you're just a Saul fan don't bother with this show.It is far beyond anything you can comprehend.

Golden - I've been waiting for this for years!
jacobnunnally11 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Let me start this review off by saying that I - hem hem - own the original four seasons of Mr. Show on DVD. Buy them on amazon - they're only like $25 bucks but they're worth a million.

I've been waiting for this for years because I love/adore the original Mr. Show - it's priceless. Perfect stoner humor. Fire one up, pop the DVD in, and laugh til it hurts.

I would say that the new run of episodes could possibly be even better than the originals. They've sharpened things up a bit, the timing is perfect (some of the original shows skits could run a bit long), and every single skit is hilarious.

What I also really enjoy is that the 5th episode is a behind the scenes thing, and it adds another layer of brilliance and hilarity to this totally amazing, hilarious, near-perfect show.

Why isn't this more popular? It's the funniest show I've ever seen. It makes SNL look pedestrian.

Oh yeah and I'm going to see David Cross at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY in April! Suck on that!

Peace!

One of the funniest shows I have ever seen in my life
koria-0434417 November 2015
I have literally no words for how funny this show was. It began and ended with outrageous amounts of sarcasm and satire which I have not seen before in comedy as often as I would have wished for. The actors are fantastic and create an exciting and humorous environment, yet with a deeper story in some segments that really lured your attention away from the fact that it was comedy. I believe this is due to the fact that these amazing actors work together dynamically enough to create such a unique approach by perfectly executing their roles which in this case is being themselves which I find hilarious. This show makes me wish we had more comedy shows that dared to make satire/sarcastic content such as this which takes great amounts of guts.

Splendid! 10/10

Agreed: Not for Everyone. The "community theater" aspect part of its charm
rzajac17 December 2015
What's fun about "W/ Bob & David" is the continuity with the old "Mr. Show". It adheres to the same comedic and production standards; and those standards were notably rough-hewn, seat-of-the-pants, cannabis-fueled, and naturally good-naturedly begged your indulgence while it sang and danced and mugged its way into your heart. I gladly granted that indulgence and in return reaped a modest collection of smiles, laughs, and even the occasional thigh-slap.

Well, actually, more than merely adhering, this new incarnation of Bob and David improves on those standards a bit. The writing is at least as good, and the production values have definitely improved.

It's great to see the old gang back together again! Looks like Johnston lost a little weight (from his S. Silverman Program days) to be able to make the same physical impression as of yore. Ennis is a fantastic talent, great to see again. Well, I'm not here to rattle off the roster. Trust me that the old gang serves the cause with the dependable aplomb.

All that said, I fully understand that all this is hedged 'round by an audience reality: Most folks don't care a whit about the above. They want a sketch show that zings and tickles again and again and again. Key & Peele comes to mind as a counter example: In spite of its general experimental, over-the-edge sensibility it actually rarely missed in its goal to astound, amuse, and entertain, with every sketch. W/ Bob & David, like its predecessor, is honestly a bit scattershot. For some of us, that's part of its charm. If you're like-minded, W/ Bob & David will work for you. Otherwise, you may well be wondering what the fuss (such as it is) is about.

Superior, World Class comedy
leekeithf6 February 2023
The quality of the writing, the cerebral content and acting is simply the best. For me it even beats Monty Python. I would have loved more episodes. Words cannot express how great this series is. Don't take my word for it, watch it. Better than Mr Show yet similar. I love W/Bob&David. I wish I'd been a writer on the show.

I'm a fan of Bob Odenkirk and his work on Mr Show, but if you were to take the best of that series and mix it with Larry David like comedy, this would be the offspring. Inspired by Pythonesque humour with intense rewrites ( no doubt there ) to perfect the medium must have agonising and painstakingly arduous, yet yielded such a fantastic comedy series. Respect is duly given.

Slightly amusing, but not ha-ha funny
mrbwiz42225 July 2021
Some smart sketches, other sketches done before but better in other places. I unfortunately did not laugh out loud once. In the making of you can see when there's pitching, there are no real hits... You might get a chuckle out of one of the many people in the room but that's about it.

Something was off with the acting and delivery. Too much time between each other's lines so that the conversations seemed overly unnatural.

It's No Mr. Show
andrewashere-886-18766715 August 2018
This show is nowhere near as good as Mr. Show was and that's too bad because I really enjoyed that series. I guess maybe they just aren't trying as hard or something, maybe they're too successful with their other work now so didn't have enough time to really put into writing and taping this show? It just seems like it hasn't been finished properly or something.

Yes there are a few good sketches that made me laugh, like the extended time travel thing they started the show with, but overall it was just sloppy and lazy and full of some pretty lame jokes. Hopefully they come back and are in their old form because I'd love that but also I don't want them to end their shows on this note.

A sequel / continuations of 1995's Mr. Show, w/Bob and David picks up where the sketch series left off, more sketches, but now with slightly older actors. Its only 4 episodes, and honestly doesn't bring much the original didn't. Like its okay, but only had a couple laugh out loud moments, otherwise was mostly vague commentary guised as meh comedy. There's also an hour long "behind the scenes / making of" episode which is as long as half of the series itself. If you liked the original definitely give this a watch, if you haven't seen the original, just watch that.

Satire is not always good
HumperPecker23 December 2015
Laugh track, Bad jokes, and Poorly executed jokes

These are all done on purpose and that doesn't make it good. If a bad movie knows it's a bad movie, that doesn't make it a good movie.

This show feels like they dug into a dumpster and found a folder containing all the rejected skits from Saturday Night Live and that does not make it funny.

If you're one of the people that can laugh at bad movies like Scary Movie or Sharknado, this might be something you'd enjoy.

I, for one, am tired of shows selling off the idea of "we're lazy and that's why it's good!" to the simple-minded who accept bad writing because it makes them laugh.

When people you really like do something terrible.
tomdallan18 November 2015
I love Saul Goodman and I love Tobias Funke. I'm not really that familiar with the rest of the work of Bob Odenkirk and David Cross but they pop up from time to time in good stuff like Curb Your Enthusiasm and the occasional excellent but generally ignored Indy film, and one of them is in a band, apparently, and I generally like them. But, for me it's mainly about the best character in Arrested Development and my favourite character in Breaking Bad who was so good was made the subject of the equally brilliant spin off show Better Call Saul.

So I was intrigued to see this new offering from these two fine actors who are currently at the top of their game. Oh how deeply disappointing. David Cross seems to be a genuinely funny guy but the rest of the cast is woeful and, try as he might, not even he can carry that much dead wood and the script is like a badly worked high school improv workshop.

Odenkirk is not a naturally funny man it seems, his timing and delivery is way off and he just looks pitifully out of his depth. He's clearly an accomplished comedy writer (if you like that sort of thing) and not a natural sketch comedy performer. The rest of the supporting cast have good pedigree but they look like they are just there to support their newly famous friends egos in this ill advised vanity project.

Maybe it's an American thing, after all Saturday Night Live has been doing this shtick for decades and is still huge despite it being about as funny as a family bereavement.

IMDb's user rating is currently 8.4 but I'll wager my favourite trousers that this ridiculously high score will plummet to under 7 by Christmas, which would still be overly generous. It is a waste and a shame because it could, nay, should have been much MUCH better considering the talent on show.

Not for everyone
dogga94-634-32312214 November 2015
This may be funny to Americans. But to worldwide audiences I think this is going to be terrible. It has that horribly cheesy typical over the top American everything about it. I just cant stand it. But It may just be bad altogether. The opening sketch was just... bad. Like you open a series with that... come on. Then the poker table sketch. Typical poorly done over the top humour. Oh wow a straight man arguing with four over the top characters, that hasn't been done before. The acting is still poor. Even from bob odenkirk which I really didn't expect. David Cross most likely ruined everything here as he always does. It just wreaks of his wrongdoings. But he is a polarising figure so if you like that stuff maybe its for you but to most its just garbage. So many better shows out there.

Might be funnier if you were American.
srj-krok17 November 2015
I admit, I primarily watched this because of Bob Odenkirk's tremendous performance as Saul from the Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul series. I recognise him as a terrific actor with great scope. Netflix have done some amazing original TV programming, primarily from giving artists the freedom to express themselves and therefore I was hoping big things from this sketch comedy.

I guess it was a mistake to enter this show with such high expectations.

Many of the jokes had been done before in other sketch shows. I guess it is hard to be original in today's day and age. Replace Homeopathy with Aromatherapy etc... I think that many of the jokes must be funnier if you have lived American Life rather than experienced a reflection of it through cinema and television; I know why something was meant to be funny, but I did not laugh because I could not personally relate.

In the four episodes there were two sketches I enjoyed and remembered, but I do not think this is enough to actually recommend a friend to watch W/ Bob & David.

In the show's defence, much of the production and editing is first class. The costumes, photography, locations and sound are of the highest quality. It is merely the comedy that falls a little flat for my taste.

(P.S I like sketch shows and sketch show comedy. Some great shows in my opinion are: That Mitchel and Webb Look; Monty Python's Flying Circus; Little Britain; The Benny Hill Show; Harry Enfield and Chums; Not the nine o'clock news; Saturday night live)

Some disappointment
tamsinmarie27 December 2015
I grew up loving Mr. Show and so it is with a heavy heart I write this review. Bob and David are hilarious, full stop. they understand what comedy is and how it should be written. I do not offend easily usually but I just cant stand for what is presented here. I am a Trans* woman and I in no way speak for the entire community but of the three episodes I've seen thus far two of them take unnecessary, cheap and not-funny pop shots at the trans community. There is nothing about David being a trans woman making commentary on sports at the end of an, otherwise very funny skit, that makes it anymore funny...at all! It is lazy writing and I think they will regret it in the not too distant future. I think we are very close to this kind of half understood comedy being seen exactly as the racist/homophobic comedy of decades past. I'm sorry, you can address any topic in a comical way BUT when you address it without being fluent on it, you open yourself up for (DESERVED) criticism. Comedy is supposed to challenge ideas and be inflammatory to get people to think but I would ask that people consider the people whom they are tearing into before writing their material. When comedy hurts people and makes no valid points or statements...it's just sophomoric garbage and if your laughing at it...then you are what is wrong with the world. :(

Severely disappointed
cal-3800710 December 2015
I'm a huge fan of comedy.

I devour it all!

I was really excited to find another sketch comedy show on netflix after watching

snl, key and peele,

Catherine tate show,Chapelle show, amy schumer,

and other great sketches over the years.

This is just not funny. It tries too hard, has underwhelming premises, and for the most part, is boring. I might give it another chance later.

Gave the first two episodes a shot but couldn't bring myself to watch anymore.

Shocking!

This is modeled after the 1970s comic British TV shows. And in 2019 the 1970s British TV shows still look good. This looks bad. Forced. The camera image quality has gone up, the budget has gone up, everything else is down the toilet.

What a waste, could've been awesome
backup-5036229 May 2022
I like those guys but those comedy bits are really poor and dragged out... It's so not funny.

I can think of a thousand scenarios and jokey premises they could've gone with, but... It never gets to funny or at least edgy greatness.

The only cool thing about this show is the obviously Cyriak intro.
