The Fisherman: A solid effort
Platypuschow12 August 2017
Gutsy little sci-fi short.

Spanish made, filmed in Cantonese and set in the bay of Hong Kong.

The film tells the tale of a frustrated multi-generation squid fisherman down on his luck who goes out in a desperate bid to change his fortunes and gets far more than he expected.

When the credits rolled it was bittersweet, it was short enough to not damage itself but at the same time I found myself craving more.

Well made considering the budget, the leading man was excellent and the SFX were competent enough. Truth be told the opening credits had me in awe purely because of the setting, its not something you see very often and was beautiful, touching but at the same time heartbreaking that people still live with such daily struggles.

Sitting at just 19 minutes including the credits I would recommend this to any fan of sci-fi or horror and hope it's creators go on to big things maybe even a full feature length version of this due to its ending.

This movie is also Asian, contains tentacles and features no "Funny business" I haven't seen this much restraint since Assassination Classroom (2015)

He Was Deserving of More

A Chinese squid fisherman is at the end of his rope. He hasn't paid rent on his boat for three months, he is ridiculed by young punks, and is feeling hopeless. He goes out one more time after stealing the boat and encounters something incredible. Unfortunately, way too incredible.

Nicely atmospheric and solid story-wise Warning: Spoilers
"The Fisherman" is a 20-minute live action short film from 2015, still a relatively new movie. It is a Spanish production as the writer and director is Alejandro Suárez Lozano, but as the film was made in Hongkong and features lead actor Andrew Ng, it is entirely in Cantonese. This is the story of a lone fisherman who makes a catch he probably did not expect and also did not really hope for I am sure. the film turns into a fight man vs. monster eventually, but who will prevail? And what happens at the same time in the man's hometown. Watch for yourself. I think sci-fi horror fans will enjoy this one particularly, but unless you really dislike the genre(s), it is also worth checking out for everybody else. Despite all the darkness in here (or maybe because of it), it is still a decent watch and pretty atmospheric from start to finish. Also a decent performance by Ng who carried the film on his own basically, also from start to finish. Go see it.

admirable work

an old fisherman. his work in Hong Kong bay. the dream about the big fish changing his modest situation. and the significant night of hunt. transforming everything. the film reminds "Old man and the sea" o "Alien". but it is ...itself. precise, impressive, careful use of details, using an ordinary situation for a great impact. and this does it different. and impressive. for the wise manner to use 20 minutes. for the discretion about the danger. for the make of each level of story. and, sure, for the wise construction of the end. in same measure, the look of Andrew Ng as Mr. Wong, remains, for long time, present in memory.

Good attempt as short indie film

Warning: Spoilers
(2) Plot... easy to follow and understand. And the reason why he gotta get big squid is clear. I didn't expect that ending. Maybe no one! haha (1) Acting... OK (0.5) Sounds... not impressive (1.5) Visual... Momster's green blood looks somehow cheap, but Wong's blood looks like real. CGI effect, such as monster (when moving), lighting, and destroyed city, looks bit cheap. But good enough quality to enjoy the film.
