Filipino filmmaker Erik Matti was just starting production on his next, long-planned crime movie when Rodrigo Duterte, incoming president of the Philippines, began his chaotic and brutal war on drugs.
Matti had won acclaim at home and abroad with taut, street-smart crime thrillers like On the Job (2013) and Honor Thy Father (2015), which premiered at Cannes and Toronto, respectively. With his latest project, what would become BuyBust, Matti intended to make his first full-scale action epic, building a story around Philippine Drug Enforcement Agents who are forced to fight for survival after a bust goes wrong in a Manila slum.

Nina Manigan is the new recruit of an elite anti-narcotic squad. However, she is definitely not a rookie, since a few months back, she was a member of another team which was completely eradicated after their leader gave them the wrong orders. In the midst of dealing with 36 baddies put back on the streets as disgraced D.A. Chase’s prosecutions get dismissed, Oliver takes delivery of a concrete slab, inside of which is a skeleton. A remarkably swift bit of detective work by Dinah reveals the deceased to be Glades councilman Henry Goodwin, while the DNA underneath his fingernails matches Robert Queen.

The Godfather made history even as it reinterpreted it. We look at the real gangsters who inspired the book and movie.
The Godfather is a historic movie that made and remade history. Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of Mario Puzo’s best-selling family novel is consistently rated in the top three motion pictures ever made, often at number 1. Some critics and film historians believe the sequel, The Godfather Part II, was an even better film, solidifying its place in the upper echelon of cinema.
The Godfather was an allegory of corporate America told personally in a family setting that interpreted real life events. It charted the rise and fall of the Mafia, a word you never hear in the movie. That is because a mob family father declared omerta and created the first Italian American anti-defamation league just to keep the movie in line, again putting cement shoes on a legend.

Although known for his flashier action-thrillers such as On The Job and The Aswang Chronicles, Filipino director Erik Matti is no stranger to the insufferably atmospheric. In his deft hands, Nine-Day Novena (Pa-Siyam) proved to be an unflinching ghost story about a dysfunctional family reunited by the recent passing of their mother. Following his grim crime drama Honor Thy Father, Matti returns with Seclusion (Seklusyon), a period thriller following a ritual which sets deacons out into a "holy fortress" to ward them off of temptation seven days before their priesthood. The film is set in the late 40's, the last instance of the said ritual. It recalls to mind a horror short film Matti directed in 2012 called Vesuvius, in which a young man sees demons hiding behind the disguise...

We've been keeping tabs on On The Job and Honor Thy Father director Erik Matti's upcoming action thriller Buy Bust for a little while now but while prepping that film the director has very quietly - so quietly it's not even listed on the IMDb at this point - been putting the final buff and polish on his new horror film Seclusion. Details are limited at this point but we do know that the story revolves around the tradition of young men preparing for the priesthood being sent off on silent retreat for the final few days before ordination as this is when they will be under most direct attack by evil forces. Ronnie Alonte stars and with the film now very deep in post...

Erik Matti (Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles, Rigodon), the maestro Filipino director, really knocked it out the park with his 2013 hired-assassin thriller On the Job. Not one to rest on his laurels, his latest crime flick, Honor Thy Father (not-related to The Godfather spin off) has also been garnering much praise among critics.
But Matti is nothing if not versatile, and as such has now decided to turn his attention towards the martial arts genre with the upcoming film, Buy Bust. Although still just in pre-production, it has already been announced that the film will feature American-Filipino mixed-martial arts Ufc star Brandon Vera (Kamandag), and Filipino-Australian female actor, Anne Curtis (Blood Ransom, The Gifted).
Information regarding the film’s plot remains sparse, but if we were to hazard a guess we would expect gangsters, drug-lords and of course ball-busting police officers, all no doubt served up with a heavy dose of...

Filipino director Erik Matti has been on quite a roll in the past few years with his gritty thrillers On The Job and Honor Thy Father premiering in Cannes and Toronto, respectively, while his Aswang Chronicles films broke new ground for VFX work in his native country while delivering crowd pleasing entertainment. And it looks as though that roll isn't going to end any time soon with Matti currently in prep on what could easily prove to be his biggest international film to date. Though proper rehearsals are not scheduled to start until next next month with photography not scheduled until November, the principal cast of Matti's upcoming Filipino martial arts oriented action film Buy Bust have already been training in the pekiti-tirsia kali combat...
