When Kim (Rhea Seehorn) is sitting on the bed, there is a movie poster behind her for "The Thrill Hunter", a 1933 movie about a movie actress who falls for a con-artist that makes up stories about adventures he has had. Even after he is exposed, she continues to fall in love with him. This in many ways will reflect her relationship with Jimmy.
When Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk) fails to find sleep and starts zapping through the channels in the middle of the night, a Davis & Main TV commercial about his Sandpiper case in the boring old style with the vacuous background swirl comes on. This is a double rejection for him: While he might understand that his previous "showmanship" commercial ran against the image Davis & Main seeks to project, they also reject his very plausible air time strategy of airing it during the ad break of 'Murder, She Wrote (1984). In fact, they probably prevent most of the target audience from ever seeing it by airing it so late at night when the day room in the senior homes is bound to be closed.
The check that Jimmy and Kim scam from the guy at the bar is from the Cradock Marine Bank, a fictional bank Vince Gilligan uses often in his shows. For example in X-Files season 6 episode 14 titled "Monday" Scully and Mulder are trapped reliving a day that centers around a bank robbery at a branch of The Cradock Marine Bank. It also makes appearances in Breaking Bad.
Writer trademark: Vince Gilligan often has characters copying one-liners or interesting expressions that they previously heard from other characters. Here it's Kim (Rhea Seehorn)'s choice of highball - when she treats herself in the bar, she orders a 'Moscow Mule', the same drink Schweikart (Dennis Boutsikaris) had when they had lunch together.
The title refers to the song "Bali Ha'i", which is the very song that Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk) sings to Kim (Rhea Seehorn)'s answering machine. Also spelled "Bali Hai", the show tune from the 1949 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical 'South Pacific' is about a mystical island of the same name, visible on the horizon but not reachable, like Kim who has clearly been avoiding Jimmy's calls for some time.
