Usually the Chinese propaganda movies are so one sided that it becomes almost embarrassing to watch but also sometimes it can be entertaining and makes it good. Da Jue Ze or The Heavy Decision in English is a TV series that mix with full of exiting moments but also full of weaknesses makes it sometimes good and sometimes bad.
Wu Ming Tai is a successful professor at the Boston university but despite his fame he can't ignore the Japanese invasion of his country China. He make a heavy decision to return to his country to help out as much as he can. The Japanese are not happy that he returns home and make plot against him. Now Wu Ming Tai is at war with the imperial army and also his former colleague Chu has betrayed his country and do anything to defeat Wu.
As a story, it's so exiting, the battle against China and Japan, then the battle with the American army and then the anti communist Chinese is very interesting, if it wasn't for the propaganda kicked in it would have been successful.
The problem is when the propaganda kicks in it feels uncomfortable, specially the choice of foreign actors, there were 16 foreign actors in this series but only 3 were good, but those 3 had horrible roles, the two rapist soldiers and the soldier in the jeep who screamed were great but the rest seemed like picked up in the street specially the general and the judge who both looked drunk.
And of course the series has the same thing as other Chinese war series, the typical evil Japanese army, and more evil anti Chinese communist people, and clumsy and dumb American soldiers, which makes it just another propaganda series that is boring.
But what saves the series is the adventure of the series, it's exiting, a lot of explosions and shooting and epic battles between good and evil.
If it wasn't for the propaganda the series could have been epic, but it's entertaining and watchable.
