As genre makes much of the running in sales at this year’s Cannes Film Market, Filmax, traditionally one of its biggest vendors, has swooped on “32 Gats,” the next feature from Hèctor Hernandez Vicens who broke out with the 2015 SXSW premiere, “The Corpse of Anna Fritz.”
Filmax will handle distribution in Spain as well as sell international rights.
Produced by Carles Torras at Zabriskie Films, ”32 Gats,” writer-director Hernández Vicens’ fourth feature, turns on a couple, Ana, 36, and Salva, 49, who move into a house in the country where there’s space for the 32 cats that Ana has adopted in the last years.
Ana is two-months pregnant. The couple begins to rehabilitate the house for the baby’s birth, but Ana begins to sense a presence in the house, and she isn’t the only one, it seems. The cats also see something.

Many, if not most, of Spain’s Malaga Festival’s main section lineup, from Berlin Golden Bear winner “Alcarrás” to Panorama player “Lullaby,” will screen for buyers during the Spanish Screenings. Festival titles are detailed in a separate article. Following, a breakdown of further titles swelling the Screenings to a record 63-title cut.
“Ainarak,”
Directed by Juan San Martín and starring singer-songwriter Anne Etchegoyen, the documentary follows the annual diaspora from 1870 to 1940 of hundreds of women from Navarre and Aragon to Mauléon in the French Pyrenees, where they worked from fall to spring making canvas shoes. First presented at Conecta Fiction in 2021.
“Beach House,”
Hector H. Vicens, co-director of the genre-twisting “The Corpse of Anna Fritz,” which caught some heat at 2016’s SXSW, is back with a reportedly acerbic beach-set young adult comedy which lifts off as a thriller. Carles Torras, director of Malaga winner “Callback,” produces.

Tagline: "Join the Undying War." Day of the Dead: Bloodline is a partial remake of George A. Romero's Day of the Dead (1985). The film was developed by director Hèctor Hernández Vicens (The Corpse of Anna Fritz). The film stars Johnathon Schaech (Prom Night, 2008) and Sophie Skelton ("Outlander"). In this latest zombie film, survivors are scrambling to stay alive five years after an epidemic. Several military personnel live underground, while a biologist searches for a cure to the virus. In early February, Day of the Dead: Bloodline will be available on both DVD and Blu-ray formats. A look ahead to the film's home entertainment release is available now. A few early reviews have come in for the film. Michael Gingold, of Rue Morgue, hopes there will be no more re-imaginings, after watching this title: "let this be the last reimagining of the Dead series." Day of the Dead: Bloodline has few fans at Rue Morgue.

He took us into the morgue with The Corpse of Anna Fritz, and for his second feature film, Hèctor Hernández Vicens aims a morbid lens at a world gone mad in Day of the Dead: Bloodline. With the reimagining of George A. Romero's Day of the Dead coming out to theaters, VOD, and Digital HD beginning January 5th from Saban Films, Daily Dead recently spoke with lead actress Sophie Skelton, and we also had the pleasure of talking with Hèctor about the movie's twisted love story, paying homage to Romero's work while still telling a different tale, and incorporating symbolism into the living dead narrative.
Thank you for taking the time to talk about Day of the Dead: Bloodline, Hèctor. This movie is based on a beloved film by George A. Romero. Coming off your previous film, The Corpse of Anna Fritz, which I think a lot of horror fans really enjoyed,...

A twisted, cold-hearted monster features in this newly-released clip for Day of the Dead: Bloodline – and we’re not referring to the undead.
In fact, it’s a reanimated zombie that winds up saving the day, as Sophie Skelton’s heroine comes face-to-face with a sexual harasser (John Schaech) named Max. What follows is an unnerving exchange between Skelton and Schaech’s respective survivors, before the latter makes an unwanted advance.
Whether intentional or not, this Bloodline clip, one which arrives on the eve or release, appears to be ripped straight from the headlines, with the only difference being that a flesh-munching zombie arrives just in time to thwart an attempted rape. Because who said the undead always have to be portrayed as the bad guys?
Story-wise, Day of the Dead: Bloodline takes place in a “post-apocalyptic, zombie-filled world where a former med school student is tormented by a dark figure from her past.

Over thirty years ago, George A. Romero introduced us to the lovable zombie Bub, the surly Captain Rhodes, and contagious cabin fever in Day of the Dead. One of the most memorable entries to the living dead genre, Romero's 1985 movie is the inspiration behind the new reimagining Day of the Dead: Bloodline, which tells a much different story of the zombie apocalypse. With Day of the Dead: Bloodline coming out in theaters, VOD, and Digital HD beginning January 5th via Saban Films, Daily Dead recently had the pleasure of speaking with lead actress Sophie Skelton (Outlander, Ren) about her character Zoe, the legacy of Romero, the new movie's intense take on zombies, and much more.
Thank you for taking the time to talk, Sophie, and congratulations on your new movie, Day of the Dead: Bloodline. I think it's one of the more interesting ones to come out early this year...

Whether viewed as a metaphor for our starry-eyed society or perceived as a simple suspense flick, The Corpse of Anna Fritz is a gruelling, unnerving experience that will entertain and curl your toes but sensitive viewers may find it upsetting. Merging stalk and slash tropes with exploitation/revenge flicks, director Hector Hernandez Vicens harvests anxiety and

People often turn to movies when a proper escape from reality is needed, but sometimes we’re taken to a place that’s anything but a “safe retreat.” The Corpse Of Anna Fritz is one such film that would rather prod about our moral makeup than offer a cheerful fantasy, but without exploring the darkness, we might never stumble upon the revealing stories that take a little more digging to find.
Now, to be fair, I’m not referring to director Hèctor Hernández Vicens and co-writer Isaac P. Creus’ statements about necrophilia – those are waters never to be traversed. I’m more interested in the dilemma that unfolds after a morgue is turned into a sexual playground, which, while sounding sickly disturbing, offers a horrifying admission of faults only brought upon by guilty convictions.
