The Game Awards 2023 panel has revealed the full list of nominees who will be eligible to win at this year’s show. While many of the nominees are relatively unsurprising, there are certainly a few games that did (and didn’t) get nominated that will get people talking.
Here’s everything you need to know about The Game Awards 2023’s nominees and voting process.
The Game Awards 2023: How Voting Works
According to the Game Awards website, Game Awards winners are determined by a “blended vote” that accounts for jury votes and fan votes. The jury votes account for 90% of the voting weight while the fan votes make up the remaining 10%.
Though an example of that formula is not provided, it’s basically best to think of the system like a 10-person voting jury. Nine of the jurors would represent voting individuals of the group, and the 10th person would...

This month sees the launch of Super Mario Bros. Wonder: the first new Super Mario game on the Nintendo Switch since 2017’s Super Mario Odyssey and the first side-scrolling Super Mario game since 2012’s New Super Mario Bros. U on the Wii U.
While there’s plenty of buzz about Wonder being the first Super Mario game to feature a different voice actor for Mario (instead of franchise veteran Charles Martinet) in over 25 years, the game also marks the return of prolific Nintendo developer Takashi Tezuka, who serves as Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s producer.
A presence with the Super Mario series since the beginning, Tezuka is the unsung figure behind making the video game hero a global icon and figurehead of the entire video game industry.
Takashi Tezuka’s Extensive History at Nintendo

Nintendo was the big winner of this year’s Gamescom, the international video game conference that wrapped up in Cologne, Germany, on Sunday. Nintendo Switch game The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom picked up multiple awards, including for best gameplay, best audio and the honor of most epic title at this year’s event.
Already one of the highest-rated games of the year, the latest edition of the popular Zelda adventure franchise has drawn raves for its stunning visuals, open-world architecture and creative gameplay. It was easily the pick of the batch at Gamescom 2023.
Other Gamescom standouts include the action role-playing game Black Myth: Wukong from Game Science Interactive Technology, which took the best visuals honor; fighting title Mortal Kombat 1 won the best Xbox Game title; and that game company’s Sky: Children of the Light took the prize for the best mobile game award.

Unsurprising for a game by a studio with a flair for introductions, Pikmin 4 starts out giddily smacking you upside the head with visual splendor and thematic demonstration. But because that same studio is also wracked with anxiety at the thought of a story being misunderstood, the following hour is filled with a lot of rote, over-explanatory dialogue.
In some ways this throat-clearing is understandable, as this strange, fussy game without much precedent outside of the previous entries in the series is more or less geared toward casual gamers. But the decision to dump all this information all at once, especially when the vast majority of it comes via text, will be decidedly un-fun to players of all stripes.
The game’s bumpy early stretch is at least softened by the litany of delectable visual delights, teeming with lived-in details. Gardens are littered haphazardly with hand tools, falling cherry blossom leaves suggest a gentle snowfall,...

It’s been over forty years since Mario made his video game debut as the hero of 1981’s arcade classic Donkey Kong, although back then he was simply known as “Jumpman.” He’s had quite the glow up since then, appearing in over 200 video games, a Saturday morning cartoon, and now two theatrically released movies. And the success of Donkey Kong didn’t give the world just one star, it also delivered another: creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

Strategy spin-off Hey! Pikmin hits the 3Ds this month. A new video shows how the game looks and plays...
We may have to wait a little while for Pikmin 4 - a sequel Shigeru Miyamoto recently announced is definitely in the works - but to tide us over, there's always this charming little handheld spin-off to tinker with.

If you thought the original Pikmin games owed a certain debt to the strategy-puzzler classic, Lemmings, then the Nintendo 3Ds side adventure Hey! Pikmin makes the link more plain than ever. In essence, it puts Pikmin's mechanics in the context of a 2D platformer, with the player shepherding his army of sentient radishes across a landscape of traps and puzzles. The little Pikmin have their usual array of powers that come in handy - their ability to carry stuff,...

Expect more heartbreaking sentient radish deaths in Pikmin 4 - currently in development, says Shigeru Miyamoto...
While Pikmin was one of the few beloved and dormant Nintendo franchises to not make some kind of E3 appearance, Shigeru Miyamoto says you shouldn't take that as a sign of the franchise's present or future.

Miyamoto appeased the PR gods by limiting the specifics of the game's development to his assurance that the game is "actually very close to completion" and that "Pikmin teams are always working on the next one.

Waiting on the next Pikmin game? Be prepared to wait a little longer, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto says...
Some suspected that Shigeru Miyamoto had finally lost his mind when he announced that he was working on a strategy game based on his gardening experiences, but it wasn't long before the quirky little title known as Pikmin became a beloved Nintendo franchise.
As popular as the series is, though, it has remained suspiciously off the radar since Pikmin 3 released to wide acclaim in 2013. Aside from Miyamoto mentioning that Pikmin 4 was nearing completion in 2015, fans have been left to speculate when, exactly, they will be able to get their hands on this anticipated sequel.
Sadly, Miyamoto's latest update doesn't offer much hope that they can expect that day to come anytime soon.
In an interview with Game Rant, Miyamoto had this to say on the subject of Pikmin 4:

In an interview with Eurogamer back in July, Nintendo boss Shigeru Miyamoto didn’t bother holding his breath about the prospect of a sequel to the critically-acclaimed Pikmin 3. Instead, he surprised everyone by stating Pikmin 4 was “actually very close to completion. Pikmin teams are always working on the next one.”
For those unaware, Pikmin has become a Nintendo flagship series in recent years, sitting alongside the likes of Mario and Zelda as a franchise that’s expected to see a new release within the lifetime of each piece of Nintendo hardware.
And just in case you thought the comments might be the result of a translation error, Nintendo later confirmed the comments: “We can confirm that Pikmin 4 is in development but that is all we can confirm at present.”
Forthcoming and cryptic at the same time, many have come to the conclusion that the absence of any mention of the...

Game design legend Shigeru Miyamoto has said that Nintendo could "potentially" re-enter the movie business in the near future...
In discussions about videogame to film adaptations, it's inevitable that Super Mario Bros' name pops up at some point. The 1993 film's commonly held up as a videogame movie done particularly badly, with weirdly dark and sinister production design which felt a world apart from the game on which it was based. It even had a scene where Yoshi got stabbed, for heaven's sake.
Two decades later, and it sounds as though Nintendo's started thinking about making another foray into the film business. Speaking to posh business outlet Fortune, legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto's been talking about the possiblity of the Japanese videogame giant branching out into movie business.
"As we look more broadly at what is Nintendo's role as an entertainment company," Miyamoto said, "we're starting to think...

So. I’m guilty. I’m guilty of being one of the self-proclaimed fans of Nintendo who shamelessly complained at what seemed like the most lackluster Nintendo showing at E3 in years and after a day of pouting I’ve realized how wrong I really was.
First, let me give you a few samples of my bitter cynicism throughout the event.
I’m not going to lie. I felt really underwhelmed by the content showed during their Digital Event and, to be completely honest, a little blue balled. On Sunday, we knew Nintendo was going to announce Ryu, Roy, and some other new content for Super Smash Bros. WiiU. But what we didn’t know is that Ryu and Roy would be launching the same day as Lucas. On Sunday. The day of the official announcement. Not only that, but they’ve been listening to us, the fans, bitch and complain about tournament mode.
