Very enjoyable track in a fairly generic video which is livened up by the presence of a lot of stars from The Wire
I'm not sure I could name you many more Freeway tracks, but I enjoyed the album from which this track comes and in particular, like everyone, really enjoyed What We Do. The sample works, the speed and tone works, and even the spots from Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel work; it is to put it simply a very catchy track with good energy from all those involved. Only recently did the track come to my mind and I thought to find it on YouTube, which turned out to be the first time that I think I had ever seen the video.
On the face of it, it is a fairly simple affair. It has been shot around some docks, with the protagonists talking about selling drugs as their own option against the backdrop of urban decay, wet weather, and cold. The police are listening and trying to move on them to lock them up (and throw away the key). What immediately makes it more interesting for me was the surprise of seeing what appeared to be Andre Royo briefly in the middle of one or two shots – he best known for Bubs in The Wire. No sooner than I had see this then we have Hassan Johnson's Wee-bay show his face, then JD Williams, then Corey Robinson, then to set it off, Michael K. Williams – although not as Omar. Looking back from over a decade later, I give this cool points but at the same time I thought it was a bit much to cash in on the popularity of the HBO show The Wire – the show that everyone knows is great but much fewer have seen. Credit to the video though, because this was actually done back when the show just started and was in its first season – a little while before the hype over its greatness really started, so the video could not be accused of jumping in on the bandwagon.
It is a shame that they do not get more use out of the actors though – pretty much all of them must have done a few hours on-set, if that. Their faces do help the interest of the video and of course the track does the rest; the song is the reason to come, but for Wire fans there is also somewhat of a curiosity piece to it too.
