The adventure of making a tale come true
guisreis5 June 2016
Helvécio Ratton has written and produced a brilliant adult film on Brazilian dictatorship, "Batismo de sangue", but most of his movies are directed to young spectators. In the 90's Ratton directed "O menino maluquinho" (Nutty boy"), a tale about a beloved character from Brazilian youth literature. The intention was to capture the magic of childhood, but it has not been always accomplished and that film was irregular, with ups and downs. Now, Ratton comes back with "The secret of the diamonds" and similar intentions: entering juvenile world in smaller Brazilian towns. This time the goal has been successfully scored. There is a great adventure story in which teenagers pursue a dream adults do not believe on (a tale about hidden diamonds) and make it come true. Young actors are not brilliant but their performances are good enough, much better than in "O menino maluquinho". Older actors do a good job. The film was made in historical towns in the state of Minas Gerais, what gives it a fantastic scenario. Screenplay is not very sophisticated, as it aims young public, but is is charming and cute. Cienmatography and edition are also extremely competent. Parents have a great chance of watching a good film with their children which they may also enjoy.
