This episode marks the first appearance of Satan since 2006.
The game featured in the episode could be a mockery of the mobile game "Family Guy: The Quest For Stuff". Both involve the characters from their perspective tv show, the rebuilding of a town or country, and extremely long wait times to enhance the urge for the player to spend money on the game.
The title of the episode is a reference to the song "Freedom Isn't Free", from Trey Parker and Matt Stone's Puppet film "Team America: World Police." However, it's not a 'reference,' as the song was not used to directly influence this title. The phrase 'Freedom isn't Free' has been in the American lexicon LONG before Team America. Parker and Stone did not invent the phrase.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone called "Freemium Isn't Free" their favorite episode of the season.
Satan's entry to fight Belzaboot mimics Satan's entry to fight Gabriel in the movie Constantine (2005). In that film, Gabriel also manipulates events to create greater chaos on earth.
