Phoebe Tonkin is to star in and executive produce a new Australian TV crime drama series, “The Dark Lake,” based on a novel by Sarah Bailey.
The series is to be produced by Brouhaha Entertainment, the Australia-u.K. outfit headed by veteran producers Gabrielle Tana, Troy Lum and Andrew Mason. The company recently delivered Netflix’s Brisbane set “Boy Swallows Universe,” in which Tonkin also stars.
Production and financing details were not disclosed and the series has not revealed a director or a broadcast or streaming partnership.
The story follows Gemma (portrayed by Tonkin) as she is forced to confront the secrets of her past when assigned to the murder of her high school nemesis in her small and tight-knit hometown. Through law enforcement, Gemma anchors herself to the dichotomy of right and wrong, in an effort to redeem her own deeply compromised decisions.

This year provided TV fans with one of the most promising pilots in years (“Barry”) and an all-time-great series finale (that of “The Americans”), but there was plenty in between, too. The following are 20 of Variety’s critics’ favorite episodes to have aired all year, across genres. Of note: while episodes of “Atlanta,” “Barry,” “BoJack Horseman,” and “Glow” exist on generic boundary lines — technically comedies that are, at many moments in these episodes, sadder than they are funny — there are still plenty of straight-up laughs represented, either as tonic for a dark year outside the tube or just acknowledgment that the best of TV comedy is as good as ever even as dramedies and traumedies seem to have taken over the medium. The mix that follows has, perhaps, something for every viewer to catch up on over the holidays.

“It’s one of the most unpredictable categories at the Emmys: Best Movie/Mini Writing,” I declare to my fellow Gold Derby contributors Riley Chow, Zach Laws, Tom O’Brien and Tony Ruiz in our Emmy predictions slugfest (watch above). Based on our latest forecasts, this is currently predicted to be a race between the Best Limited Series front-runner “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” for the episode “House by the Lake” (Tom Rob Smith) and the Best TV Movie front-runner “USS Callister: Black Mirror” (William Bridges and Charlie Brooker). But might we be underestimating “Godless” (Scott Frank)?
“Black Mirror” is the defending champ, having won this race last year for “San Junipero,” but Laws wonders, “Has there been an instance of a repeat winner? That’s what this would technically be.” Even in an era of series and anthologies we haven’t seen a program defend its title. “Sherlock” only...

“The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” the second season of FX’s “American Crime Story” anthology series, scored 18 Emmy nominations, the most of any limited series this year. Those are spread across 13 categories, which means that if this Ryan Murphy production sweeps all of them it would tie the record currently held by HBO’s “John Adams,” which made history in 2008 by becoming the most awarded limited series of all time and the most awarded program of any genre in a single year.
“Versace” scored a trio of nominations in two categories: Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actor and Best Movie/Mini Picture Editing. It also scored double nominations for Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actress (Penelope Cruz and Judith Light).
The show is nominated once apiece in its other 10 categories. It received bids for Best Limited Series, Best Movie/Mini Directing (Murphy for the episode “The Man Who Would be Vogue”) and...

When the Emmy nominations were announced on Thursday morning, July 12, it looked like it might have been a complete shut out for “Twin Peaks.” The Showtime revival was snubbed for Best Limited Series and Kyle MacLachlan was also missing from Best Movie/Mini Actor. But when the entire list was released it turned out the show had done pretty well for itself in behind-the-scenes categories. It picked up nine total bids including Best Movie/Mini Directing for David Lynch and Best Movie/Mini Writing for Lynch and Mark Frost. Could the show still win those categories despite its snub in top categories? Yes, because “The Hour” is at hand.

For his stunning breakout role on “American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” Cody Fern went to dark places playing a cautious out gay man entangled with spree killer Andrew Cunanan.
Australian-born Fern plays David Madsen, a sweet and eligible architect who can’t seem to shake his former lover Cunanan — who is a compulsive liar and increasingly desperate following a split with a generous older boyfriend.
After witnessing the gruesome murder of their mutual friend Jeff Trail at Cunanan’s hands, Madsen is taken hostage and eventually meets the same end. The Ryan Murphy FX series serves as a sort of redemption for Madsen, who was initially thought to be Cunanan’s accomplice.

The television academy’s acting branch has a love affair with Ryan Murphy productions, which earn multiple Emmy nominations for their performances year after year. “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” the second installment of Murphy’s “American Crime Story” anthology series, now enters the Emmy race and could dominate the Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actor category just like “The Normal Heart” and “The People v. O.J. Simpson” did.
Having multiple nominees from the same series or movie can yield mixed results. Before Murphy began his anthology empire Mike Nichols‘s “Angels In America” scored four out of the five available slots for Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actor in 2004: Justin Kirk, Ben Shenkman, Patrick Wilson and Jeffrey Wright were joined by William H. Macy (“Stealing Sinatra”). Macy was unable to stop the “Angels In America” juggernaut, so Wright took home the Emmy for playing Belize and Mr. Lies, the...

Daniel Minahan received his first Emmy nomination last year, as an executive producer of Best Drama Series nominee “House of Cards,” but he forfeited his position as the in-house director of that Netflix political thriller, now going into its final season, to be lead director on “The Assassination of Gianni Versace.” “I felt so strongly about this material,” Minahan explains in an interview with Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video above).
“We touched on really important topics about what it was like to live in that time and how these people were all impacted by this one guy’s actions,” Minahan says about the 1990s-set second season of the true crime anthology series “American Crime Story” on FX from Ryan Murphy. Originally subtitled “Versace/Cunanan,” the ultimate subtitle “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” eschews explicit reference to its main character, a serial killer played by “Glee” actor Darren Criss. Virtually everything about the lengthy title “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” is misleading. For one, it’s less of a crime story — in the “Law & Order,” cops and courtrooms sense — than a biography of Andrew Cunanan, the man who murdered at least five people over a three-month span in 1997. One of those people was iconic fashion designer Gianni Versace, but his relevance to Cunanan’s life, and thus the series overall, is largely symbolic — he’s the American dream, and he’s still damaged.
To the show’s credit, these shifts aren’t problematic or even the most jarring twist on Season 1’s “The People vs. O.J. Simpson.” “Versace” is told in flashforward; it starts with Versace’s death and then works its way back in time through Cunanan’s other homicides and even into his childhood. This structural choice never delivers the emotional...

Stars: James Callis, Anne Dudek, Amiah Miller, Natasha Bassett, Michael Bowen | Written by Josh Burnell | Directed by Adam Gierasch
Despite his output being less than prolific, I’ve been a huge fan of director Adam Gierasch for years – ever since I saw Autopsy and his stellar remake of Night of the Demons (one of the “good” remakes, even though the original is a stone-cold classic). House by the Lake is only his third feature since those films, though he was a part of the portmanteau Tales of Halloween in 2015. Surprisingly, unlike the rest of his oeuvre this film is the first Gierasch has directed that he hasn’t written – and it shows. House by the Lake is unlike any of his other films; feeling very much like a low-budget family drama instead of the usual balls to the wall horror Gierasch is associated with.

Random Media turns a picturesque retreat into a destination of terror in House By The Lake, the latest film from veteran genre scribe Adam Gierasch (Night of the Demons, Tales of Halloween, Fractured, Autopsy), with a script by newcomer Josh Burnell.
A struggling couple, Scott and Karen, pack up their troubled young daughter and head to a picturesque lake house to reconnect and put their problems behind them. As Emma spends time with her new nanny, the little girl begins fixating on an imaginary friend she calls the Fish Man. Karen’s fear of the strange man down the beach, Emma’s fear of the water and her recurring sleepwalking continue to raise tensions in the house and drive a wedge between Scott and Karen until one night Emma disappears. When she’s found breathing underwater in the tub, Emma insists she’s been with the Fish Man. And he’s coming back for her.
