Kate Winslet and Idris Elba star in a disaster movie turned schmaltzy romance
Idris Elba, Kate Winslet and a giant, snowy mountain: what’s not to love? Free-spirited photojournalist Alex (Winslet) has been “shooting neo-Nazis for the Guardian”, and is getting married in the morning, straitlaced brain surgeon Ben (Elba) has to operate on a dying 10-year-old the next day, they’re stuck in Salt Lake City airport and all flights have been grounded. The pair buddy up and persuade a charter pilot to fly them across a mountain range, despite an impending storm. They pile into the plane, Alex practically hanging out of the window trying to snap pictures while Ben plays Candy Crush, dressed in a cashmere sweater and inappropriately suave camel coat.
Inevitably, the plane crashes, leaving them freezing and stranded, with only the pilot’s golden retriever to keep them company. But then disaster movie warps into schmaltzy romance,...

“The Mountain Between Us” is one of those movies that’s impossible to watch without imagining the elevator pitch that got the project off the ground (yes, it was adapted from a Charles Martin novel of the same name, but someone still had to sell Hollywood on the idea). “It’s ‘The Grey’ meets ‘The English Patient’!” “It’s ‘Alive’ meets ‘Before Sunrise’!” “It’s ‘Cast Away,’ but if Tom Hanks was a little horny for Wilson!” Amusingly billed as a “romance-disaster” on the film’s Wikipedia page, Hany Abu-Assad’s dreary but diverting high-altitude epic is a “will they or won’t they?” flirtation superimposed onto a classic story of survival. It’s fantastically unrealistic stuff from the first minute to the last (and there are far too many minutes between them), but Idris Elba and Kate Winslet generate enough heat to keep the frostbite at bay, and Mandy Walker...

Just in case you haven’t seen or even heard about the new show, Candy Crush, here’s a little basic background info on the show. The host of Candy Crush is Mario Lopez. You may remember him from the TV sitcom “Saved by the Bell”. Or, you could remember him from the many times he took off his shirt on the popular soap opera “The Bold & the Beautiful”. On the other hand, you probably watched him on “The X Factor” or “Dancing with the Stars”. Mario also guest starred on three episodes of the hit series that’s now on Cmt,

The Emoji Movie took two years from rights acquisition to get to the screen. Here's what happened...
For my money – and I can say that, as I stumped up to see it – there’s been no worse feature film on a big screen this year than The Emoji Movie.
The animated film, from Sony Pictures Animation (who gave us the much better than it was reported to be Smurfs film earlier this year), has a credits list full of really talented people. Good people. Just ones who found themselves working on a fast-tracked movie that was seemingly made purely, purely, purely for business reasons. At no point in the film is there a eureka moment, an impression that somebody hatched a great story they wanted to tell. Instead, to understand quite how The Emoji Movie turned out as it did, you have to go back in time.

Summer 2017 will unfortunately be remembered for its real-life horrors, from Nazi-loving white supremacists marching in Charlottesville to the devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Texas. Americans looking to escape the barrage of bad news didn’t do it in the movie theaters, where domestic box office was at its lowest in decades. But they did flock to television — and two shows in particular.
HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” aren’t new, but they are small-screen staples that experienced tremendous ratings lifts this season. Even as audiences continue to move to streaming services and other platforms, there’s still room for appointment TV, as viewers still watch linearly (or, at least, relatively fast via time-shifting) in order to stay in the pop culture conversation.

Those symbols on your phone come to life in The Emoji Movie. Here's our review...
There are bad films and then there are terrible films. Terrible films leave the viewer in mental and emotional anguish following a confusing and often offensive couple of hours during which, for some reason, they were unable to leave the cinema or simply hit the stop button on their remote. We’ve all sat through a terrible movie or two (or several) before we start learning how best to avoid them.
Bad films, on the other hand, are only as irksome when it comes to how bored they leave you feeling. Bad films don’t offend or excite - they don’t leave you feeling much of anything. That’s their crime, they fail to move you in any direction and add nothing to your life but time wasted.
The Emoji Movie is one of those bad films,...

Bookended by an old story updated 60 Minutes (0.6/3) and the second week of Candy Crush…...

Week 2 of CBS’ “Candy Crush” couldn’t keep up with the series’ solid premiere numbers: the game show lost 29 percent of its overall debut audience, with a 27 percent decline among adults 18-49. Still, the broadcaster topped Sunday in that key age-range — but the bigger-picture slip allowed ABC to finish first among total viewers. ABC finished just one-tenth of a Nielsen ratings point behind CBS in the main demo. Les Moonves can thank “Big Brother” for that, which just so happens to be hosted by his wife.
