A beautifully made heart-wrencher.

"Catching Fireflies" is an amazingly beautiful and imaginative film. It's also depressing and awful--because the story is about a little girl being raised in hellish surroundings. This is because the girl's mother is a drug addict and they live in a crappy homemade shack along with a lot of other homeless folks and addicts. Despite this awful situation, the child has a very active imagination and where adults would see violence and awfulness, she often sees fairies and other magical beings. What is the future for this little girl?

The film has a great but sad point to make about kids in addicted households. But it also shows how resilient and how the child copes in such an awful situation--and the special effects are awfully amazing. It's obvious that while this film is short, they had some money and took the time to make it look amazing. Well done...and gut-wrenching.
