Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What are your winter holiday season viewing habits (that are not for work)? Do you have traditional go-to shows or movies? Are you looking forward to anything in particular?
Eric Deggans (@deggans), NPR
As I have written in the past, I’m not the kind of critic who loves holiday specials. Too often, they’re too hokey, too commercial, too weird (yes, Bill Murray, I still don’t get “A Very Murray Christmas”) or, in the case of countless Hallmark Channel movies, way too white. But I do have a few holiday media traditions, starting with my Spotify Holiday Tunes playlist, which gets fired up as...

NBC’s unedited 50th-anniversary broadcast of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! drew 5.2 million total viewers and a 1.2 rating on Friday, easily winning the night in the demo while giving the Peacock a 21-month, non-Olympics high in the time slot. Versus a year ago (when it aired on a Wednesday with a strong lead-in), the Grinch was down 5 and 20 percent.
Leading out of that, How Murray Saved Christmas retained 3.3 mil and a 0.8.

Fast National ratings for Thursday, December 25, 2014. The animated "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and the Jim Carrey live-action "Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas" ruled Christmas Thursday primetime, even if a "Big Bang Theory" repeat was still the night's most-watched show. There weren't many other Christmas ratings notables, though ABC is saying that its NBA double-header was up double-digits from last year. On to the primetime notables... Among adults 18-49, ABC averaged a 1.8 rating for Thursday night, comfortably tops in the key demographic. CBS was a distant second with a 0.8 key demo rating, followed by Fox's 0.5 key demo rating. NBC's 0.3 rating and The CW's 0.2 rating trailed in the key demo for the night. Overall, CBS averaged a 3.0 rating/6 share to ABC's 2.5/5, but ABC averaged 5.18 million viewers to the 4.86 million for CBS for Thursday primetime. There was a big drop to Fox's 2.36 million viewers and 1.5/3 and to NBC's 1.0/2 and 1.48 million viewers.

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including Revenge, Sons of Anarchy, Forever and Bones!
1 | Did Girl Meets World’s highly anticipated Shawn-Cory reunion even need a laugh track? That was one of the most serious Christmas episodes ever. And why no mention of Shawn’s love life? (We want Angela! We want Angela!)
2 | How Murray Saved Christmas: culturally insensitive foolishness, or irreverent holiday romp?
3 | Wasn’t The Affair’s Helen strangely flippant about her daughter’s potential bulimia?
4 | On Revenge,...

A holiday hero who dishes out pastrami on rye and calls Santa’s reindeer by Seinfeld character names? Yeah, we can get into that.
NBC on Friday premiered How Murray Saved Christmas, an animated special that follows a grumpy diner owner (voiced by Jerry Stiller, The King of Queens) as he’s pressed into service when Santa is unable to make his annual rounds.
Most of the action takes place in a town where all holiday mascots, such as the Easter Bunny and Baby New Year, live. On the whole, it’s a happy little ‘burg… until you listen closely...

In the mood for some Christmas cheer? About a Boy‘s Will has two words for you: “Bah, humbug.”
TVLine has an exclusive sneak peek at the NBC comedy’s Christmas episode (Tuesday, 9:30/8:30c) and it seems Will has no interest in the holiday spirit.
In the clip below, Will and Marcus visit Will’s former bandmate Deb (who doubled as a groupie back in the day, apparently), hoping to track down the lyrics of Will’s Christmas hit “Runaway Sleigh.”
While it’s easy to poke fun at Deb — that teddy bear shirt is a questionable fashion...

What happens when a Simpsons scribe (Mike Reiss) grabs hold of the reins from Santa’s sleigh? Thanks to NBC, we’re about to find out.
How Murray Saved Christmas, premiering Dec. 5 at 8/7c, tells the story of a disgruntled restauranteur (voiced by Jerry Stiller) who reluctantly embraces the Christmas spirit when he’s forced to take over for Santa Claus — and TVLine has an exclusive clip of Murray’s first bumpy ride through the skies.
