Despite being one of the world’s most rich and vibrant film scenes, Latin American cinema outside of those vying for an Oscar or from an established auteur rarely sees Us screens. That is, admittedly, changing, particularly in larger cities like New York and La, but a vast majority of Latin American pictures still find a hard time getting a Us release of any real note, outside of VOD or a Netflix run.
However, there’s one film series hoping, in its own small way, that it may be able to speed things up a bit.
For the first time, distributor Cinema Tropical (one of the great boutique distributors of Latin American cinema currently running) is teaming up with one of New York’s great film going establishments. Anthology Film Archives will play host to a new series of films in their New York premieres, with curation by director Matias...

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2014 discoveries”…
Ryan Zacarias: 1. Thomas Dinger‘s Fur Mich (album), Manabu Yamanaka (photographer), Ricardo Silva’s Navajazo (film).
Lavallee: I Used to Be Darker, Ping Pong Summer, and now Entertainment — you’ve had a trio of films featured in the Next section. Using this cross-section of films, could you describe what kind of DNA is needed for you to throw your weight behind a given film as a producer.
Zacarias: I think I gravitate towards projects (and filmmakers) that have a bit of a skewed sensibility. I tend to find stuff that focuses heavily on image, whether its observing a character, the atmosphere of the location, or photographic movements (or stillness). I’d rather you tell me your story through imagery and tone, than force your way through with a bunch of nonsensical dialogue to make me understand. I kinda of lose interest at that point.

The Locarno Film Festival has announced their lineup for the 67th edition, taking place this August between the 6th and 16th. It speaks for itself, but, um, wow...
"Every film festival, be it small or large, claims to offer, if not an account of the state of things, then an updated map of the art form and the world it seeks to represent. This cartography should show both the major routes and the byways, along with essential places to visit and those that are more unusual. The Festival del film Locarno is no exception to the rule, and I think that looking through the program you will be able to distinguish the route map for this edition." — Carlo Chatrian, Artistic Director
