- Lovers clash. Friends fight. Neighbors brawl. This is the story of DRIFTING, the sometimes hilarious, sometimes heart-wrenching new film that examines how people only hate the ones they love.
- DRIFTING Written by Kieran Angelini, directed by Anthony Caldarella
DRIFTING follows a series of interconnected stories with a common theme: how people sometimes hate the ones they love. A group of friendsKokomo, Frank, Rudy, Gauthier, and Kengather at a backyard barbecue. During the film, we see how their lives are changed by the events of the film.
The reason for the barbecue: to celebrate the good fortune of Koko, an aspiring tabla musician and sometime thief. He has been offered a job in a world- renowned international orchestra. As the film opens, Koko answers an urgent call from his partner, Snapper, who has been nailed to a pew in a church. We learn that Snapper and Koko robbed the bagman of a powerful, psychopathic criminal, Mustafa. Snap has convinced Mustafa to spare their lives by offering to give him the ransom from a planned and very lucrative kidnapping. Furious, Koko at first refuses to participate, and even blames Snapper for making him a criminal but eventually agrees because their lives are at stake.
Complicating the crime, a woman who works for the victim enters the church. Rather than exposing them, she agrees to help them.
Simultaneously, Frank and Elle, a long-married, eternally arguing husband and wife, face their own dilemma. After 20 long years, they are being evicted from their home and place of business (a laundromat) by the wealthy, heartless owner.
This news adds greater stress to a relationship already about to fracture. Rudy and Sy are about to write a book about their recently departed, much- beloved mentor, E. Paul Banks. The problem: neither has ever written a book before. And they cant agree on the facts of the subjects life. The two amateurs attempt to write the book with disastrous, friendship-ending results.
Gauthier is a selfish, self-centered actor whose career is in jeopardy. If he fails to land an important role, his agent will drop him. As Gauthier rehearses feverishly, he is interrupted by a loud, drunken neighbor who desperately needs someone to talk to. Their encounter changes Gauthiers outlook on life forever.
Ken and Miri are lovers who fight over her unintended pregnancy: whose fault was it? Should she have used protection? Should he? Should they keep the child, abort the child, put the child up for adoption? Should they marry? Theres no easy answer especially when each take intractable positions. As the backyard barbecue ends, questions are answered, and stories are resolvedone of them tragically.
