The Screen Actors Guild announced their annual nominations this morning and there are some minor plot twists. They rejected May December in totality (Todd Haynes movies do continue to struggle with non-critic based movie awards bodies), embraced Nyad just like the Globes did, and threw new question marks around both Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. No major plot twists this year, though, like an I Smile Back, Woman in Gold, or St. Vincent.
The SAG Awards will stream live on Netflix this year – a first! – as we’ve long suspected awards shows will move to streaming like everything else has. Comments and a full list of nominees after the jump…...

"Maestro," Bradley Cooper's directorial follow-up to his 2018 Academy Award-winning "A Star is Born," has just cast another major role. The film already stars Cooper as composer Leonard Bernstein in intense prosthetic makeup, along with Matt Bomer as one of Bernstein's lovers, Carey Mulligan as his wife, and Maya Hawke as his eldest daughter Jamie, but now they will be joined by funnywoman Sarah Silverman. According to Deadline, Silverman will be playing Bernstein's sister. The actor has done serious roles before in films like "I Smile Back" and the series "Masters of Sex," so "Maestro" should give her another chance to show off her dramatic chops.

Based on the 2009 British miniseries “Unforgiven” and directed by Nora Fingscheidt, “The Unforgivable” sees Viola Davis return to Netflix in 2021, which means the queen of the Screen Actors Guild Awards could extend her reign.
Davis, who will be competing in the supporting actress category for “The Unforgivable,” is very much a long shot for a nomination, but she has jumped from just inside the top 40 to 14th place in our combined SAG Awards odds since the film hit Netflix on Dec. 10 following two weeks of limited theatrical release. “The Unforgivable,” which skipped all the fall festivals, received, uh, mixed review after mixed review, and faces internal Netflix competition from top Oscar contenders, including “The Power of the Dog,” “Don’t Look Up,” “The Lost Daughter” and “Passing” — all of which are also contending in supporting actress. If it feels like we were just writing about the 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards, well, that’s probably because they got pushed to later in 2021 than usual due to the Covid-19 pandemic. That ceremony, the 27th of its kind, took place on April 4. That shift of the awards calendar is resulting in some changes to this year’s races as well.
The eligibility period for both films and television series, and their respective performers, this year is condensed — from March 1 to Dec. 31. Submissions for all categories were due Nov. 5, with balloting opening Dec. 6 and continuing through 5 p.m. Pt on Jan. 9. The 28th annual SAG Awards nominations will be announced Jan. 12 with final voting opening Jan. 19 and continuing through noon Pt on Feb. 25. The winners will be announced at the live ceremony on Feb. 27.
Ahead of all that, Variety highlights important ballot areas to keep your eye on when voting.

As theaters await “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” (Paramount) and “No Time to Die” (United Artists) over the next two weeks, home viewing options are similarly on the rise. “Free Guy” (Disney), honoring a 45-day window, debuts on Premium VOD September 28. Friday sees two theatrical openers: “Addams Family 2” (United Artists) and “The Many Saints of Newark” (Warner Bros.), also available at home.
That left a more routine week on the charts we follow, although some recent releases got attention as they made their first appearances. But price reductions, led by “F9” (Universal), were also important.
The latest entry in the “Fast” series, which opened in domestic theaters in early June, and then at $19.99 on PVOD in late July, just had its price cut to $5.99 (consistent with the timing of past Universal moves). If we have learned anything from movies of recent years, it is that moving into one’s dream house will surely lead to terror and death. That improbable yet familiar arc is traced again in “Intrusion,” wherein the domesticity under threat belongs to a wide-eyed Freida Pinto. Director Adam Salky and writer Christopher Sparling’s thriller will provide uninspired if serviceable fodder for subscribers when it launches on that platform Sept. 22.
The Parsons have just moved from Boston into a luxe, secluded New Mexico home that Henry (Logan Marshall-Green) designed, in part to provide him and Meera (Pinto) a fresh start after her difficult recovery from breast cancer. After dining out one night, they return to discover the place has been ransacked, though the intruders took nothing apart from a laptop and two cellphones. An alarm system is hastily installed — yet there’s another break-in, this one while the couple are asleep in bed.

With the Golden Globes weighing in today with their choices, the Screen Actors Guild awards are next on the docket and have a stronger correlation to the Oscars.
A group of 2,500 randomly selected SAG-AFTRA members vote for the coveted awards, often resulting in an eclectic group of nominees. In past years, shocking inclusions like Sarah Silverman (“I Smile Back”), Emily Blunt (“The Girl on the Train”) and Peter Dinklage (“The Station Agent”) have shaken things up. They’re also known for their big omissions, like Clive Owen and Natalie Portman in “Closer,” who both won Golden Globe awards for their performances in 2005.
Could “Mank” lead the way as it did with the Golden Globes? Will “The Trial of the Chicago 7” assert itself as the most likely Oscar contender for Netflix? Can “Da 5 Bloods” and “One Night in Miami” bounce back after the HFPA gave it the shaft? Can...

In 2019, Julia Garner became the rare TV supporting actress to earn an individual Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for her performance as the feisty Ruth Langmore in “Ozark.” Since then, she has won two consecutive Emmys for the Netflix drama and just earned her third Critics’ Choice nomination. While she is predicted to earn another nomination from SAG-AFTRA for “Ozark” this year, she is also in contention for a project on the film side, “The Assistant.” And based on voters’ demonstrated love for her performance in “Ozark,” she could very well be a stealth Best Actress contender for her decidedly different turn in “The Assistant.”
In the film, Garner plays Jane, an assistant who works at a film production company who suspects her boss is a sexual predator engaging in affairs at the office. The actress gives a largely internalized performance, relying on subtle facial gestures and body language to...

Every November, as families gather for Thanksgiving and look ahead to the end of the year, the film industry starts to dream about Sundance. Well, 2020 may have challenged a lot of annual traditions, but the Sundance one lives on: Yes, the 2021 edition has shrunk to seven days, and most audiences will experience it far from Park City. The festival is being planned as a mostly virtual affair (with some drive-ins in the Los Angeles area), which means that there won’t be the usual buzz on Main Street driving audiences to discover new movies.
Thankfully, there won’t be a shortage of movies. In the process of researching our annual Sundance wish list, IndieWire had no trouble finding 50 movies that we hope make the cut in this year’s lineup. Filmmakers have started to hear back from the festival and the full selection is expected to go public next month,...

Showtime is taking on the story of Uber, putting in development an untitled limited series based on Mike Isaac’s bestselling book Super Pumped: The Battle For Uber, from Billions co-creators Brian Koppelman and David Levien.
The book, published by W.W. & Company, Inc. on September 3, chronicles the founding of Uber through its 2019 initial public offering.
Pivoting on Travis Kalanick, Uber’s hard-charging CEO who was ultimately ousted in a boardroom coup, Showtime says the limited series will depict the roller-coaster ride of the upstart transportation company, embodying the highs and lows of Silicon Valley. Even amid the radical upheaval generated within the global tech capital, Uber stands out as both a marvel and a cautionary tale, featuring internal and external battles that ripple with unpredictable consequences.
Koppelman and Levien will executive produce and write the series as part of their overall deal with Showtime, which will produce. Isaac will co-executive produce the project.

Sarah Silverman is headed to HBO.
The comedian has signed a deal for a new comedy special with the premium cabler, with HBO also giving Silverman a pilot order for a late-night series. The news comes less than a year after Hulu canceled Silverman’s Emmy-nominated talk show “I Love You, America with Sarah Silverman” after two seasons. Silverman served as host and executive producer.
Silverman, Judd Apatow and Amy Zvi serve as executive producers on the pilot for the series. Additional credits for the pilot and the stand-up special will be announced at a later date. Silverman described the late-night series as “weighing in on the mishigas of the week and taking live video calls.”
“I’m as passionate talking about my face-washing routine as I am talking about why billionaires cost us money,” she added. “Nothing’s off the table and nothing’s too high or low brow for me.

As a comedian, Sarah Silverman says the type of humor she personally gravitates toward is the really “aggressively dumb, silly humor,” such as fart jokes. But lately, she has become much more known for her political commentary on her Emmy-nominated Hulu show, “I Love You, America With Sarah Silverman,” as well as on her Twitter account.
“I never made a plan of who I wanted to be or what I wanted to talk about,” Silverman says. “The world around me is just my ‘General Hospital’.… Eventually the world around me became more interesting to me.”
Silverman, set to receive her star Nov. 9 on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, says she can’t pinpoint a specific moment that made her want to incorporate more of what was going on around her in the world into her work. But, she says, she has “come to a place in my life where I...

The SAG nominating committe has to turn in their ballots tomorrow (Sunday, December 10th) and we're naturally very curious as to how their votes turned out. We'll find out this coming Wednesday. The bulk of the nominees are usually the obvious set who are carrying a ton of buzz. But that's just the bulk. SAG has been known to throw at least one total wildcard into the mix (remember Naomi Watts for St Vincent, 2014, or Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, 2015, or Hustle & Flow for ensemble in 2005?).
Let's take a look at the truly competitive Outstanding Ensemble category...

When our own Heather Wixson spoke with Wish Upon director John R. Leonetti, he mentioned that a more extreme version of the PG-13 film would be released on home media. If you were excited about the announcement, then your wish is about to come true, because Broad Green Pictures has now announced an October 10th home media release of the supernatural horror film (read Heather's review here), including a Director's Unrated Cut with all-new footage not seen in theaters:

Broad Green: How Wall Street Wealth, A-List Talent, and Brash Decisions Made an Indie Player Implode
It takes guts to join the indie distribution fray, especially when the market is challenged by big buyers like Netflix and Amazon Studios (which, along with Annapurna, is optimistically taking over its own theatrical distribution) and television is chasing down the hottest indie talent. Even one-time high-flyer The Weinstein Co., which once knew better than anyone how to play the indie game, is evolving to survive during these changing times.
When Wall Street billionaires Gabriel Hammond, 38, and his brother, Daniel, 34, launched independent producer-distributor Broad Green Pictures three summers ago, Hollywood was skeptical. It was a strange time to reinvent a dying economic model.
Now, after trying to use arcane algorithms to determine what movies to make, Gabriel has decided to pull the plug on production. The breaking point was the July 14 release of John Leonetti’s “Wish Upon,” which grossed $13.2 million on a $12 million budget. (Theaters return about half of the take to the distributor,...

Being a stand-up comedian isn't exactly an easy career path, and going down that road is even more difficult if you're a woman who aspires to have a family one day. No one knows this better than Sarah Silverman, who recently shed some light on a double standard that persists in the comedy industry when it comes to balancing your career with having kids. "As a comic always working & on the road I have had to decide between motherhood & living my fullest life & I chose the latter," she tweeted on Monday to her 10.1 million followers. "Men don't have to do that. I'd so love to be a fun dad, coming home from the road & being my best fun dad self. So this is just a lil f*ck all y'all bc u can't be a woman w/out sacrifice & that's the fact jack." The I Smile Back actress, who is currently dating actor Michael Sheen,...

It was baffling when distributor Broad Green Pictures pulled Lucy Walker’s “Untitled Buena Vista Social Club Documentary” from the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, the same day as its intended premiere, with a press release that said the “post production process has taken longer than expected.”
Nearly a month later, Broad Green has made no further comment on the film’s status, but its homepage still boasts that “Lucy Walker’s Buena Vista Social Club documentary will have it’s [sic] official world premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival!”
That disconnect (and typo) could be a matter of sloppy site maintenance, but multiple IndieWire interviews with people familiar with Walker’s film and Broad Green suggest more complex issues dog the three-year-old would-be studio. (Walker declined to comment for this article; Broad Green executives didn’t respond to requests for comment.)

The Toronto International Film Festival is the starting gate for fall acquisitions, but for buyers the greatest challenge isn’t their competitors; it’s a target audience that can’t be roused from their couches. That means indie distributors must amend their strategies — if not rewrite them altogether.
“A movie that tests 75 doesn’t warrant a theatrical release in the current marketplace,” said one indie studio executive. “Filmmakers are going to have to be okay with going to Netflix, and only Netflix.”
To that point, Netflix bought Svod rights to Ana Lily Amirpour’s “The Bad Batch” after its Venice Film Festival premiere — but theatrical remains available as it goes into Tiff. Netflix tends to reserve its theatrical platforms for awards titles. Without streaming rights, “The Bad Batch” would have to find a buyer who’s satisfied with only theatrical and DVD revenue.

When Wall Street billionaires Gabriel Hammond, 37, and his brother, Daniel, 33, launched independent producer-distributor Broad Green Pictures two summers ago, Hollywood was skeptical about its prospects. In a time when even the Weinsteins are struggling to survive, it was a strange time to reinvent a dying economic model.
Now Broad Green is laying off around 6 percent of its staff, all of whom work in the publicity department, the company confirmed to IndieWire. Broad Green’s publicity head Adam Keen, a former Warner Bros. publicity exec, has resigned. Marketing and communications personnel are traditionally the first casualties of cutbacks in Hollywood.
The layoffs were unsurprising. Ken Kwapis’s Sundance comedy “A Walk in the Woods” starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte managed $30 million, but that couldn’t counterbalance films like Ramin Bahrani’s well-reviewed real estate thriller “99 Homes” ($1.7 million domestic) and Sarah Silverman’s depressive drama “I Smile Back” ($58K). Colin Trevorrow delivered one of the biggest and most successful movies of 2015 – and indeed, of all time – with Jurassic World, and quickly signed up to join the expanding Star Wars universe by boarding Star Wars: Episode IX as director. But, these giant projects have clearly done little to dissuade the filmmaker from his low-budget roots, as he is currently preparing to release The Book Of Henry – for which we now have an official image.
The tiny drama is highly anticipated thanks to Trevorrow’s presence behind the camera – but it is those that have flocked to his project to perform in front of the camera that are arguably the biggest draw. This will be the first theatrical release to star young actor Jacob Tremblay, since his award-winning turn in last year’s Room, and it lines him up alongside Jaeden Lieberher (St. Vincent) in the role of the titular Henry.

2016 SAG Awards Predictions: The Winners Last-minute SAG Awards predictions, as the 2016 SAG Awards ceremony will begin in about half an hour (Jan. 30) at the Shrine Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles. So far, there's one clear winner at the ceremony. That's veteran film and (mostly) television actress Carol Burnett (The Carol Burnett Show, Annie), who will be handed the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey will be handling that particular presentation. As for the SAG Awards' competitive motion picture categories, this year remains murkier than most even though the list of likely winners has been narrowed down in recent weeks – especially following the Golden Globes ceremony and the Oscar nominations announcement. The 'oddities' The easy part: eliminating the “oddities.” No matter how good (or not-so-good) their performances, Johnny Depp in Black Mass, Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, Helen Mirren in Woman in Gold, Idris Elba...
