Ellen Horne (above right) who was the executive producer of award-winning podcast Radiolab for over a decade (2003-2015), is launching a new investigative podcast, Admissible: Shreds of Evidence, hosted by reporter Tessa Kramer (above left) and co-produced by Vpm (Central Virginia’s public media station) and iHeartPodcasts.
The series, which launched February 7, 2023, delves into the story of 13 men who were exonerated thanks to the discovery of biological evidence preserved by forensic scientist Mary Jane Burton and stashed away for decades in a Virginia records facility. Burton was hailed as a hero for saving the evidence, but when a former coworker disputes that narrative, a pattern of questionable practices and shadowy motives begins to arise.
"When we began investigating allegations of a cover-up within the Virginia Department of Forensic Science, it became clear to us that this story was much bigger than one forensic scientist," Horne recalls; this project emerged from...

The CNN Originals hub debuted on Discovery+ on Friday, as the new home for the news channel’s streaming library following the abrupt closure of CNN+.
The hub was announced earlier this month, and features over 800 episodes of content from CNN Original Series, CNN Films, and Hln Original Series. Additional content will be added after their linear run on the CNN cable networks.
Some of the original content that appeared on CNN+ has popped up elsewhere. The documentary The Last Movie Stars, about Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, debuted this summer on HBO Max. Chris Wallace’s talk show, one of the marquee offerings, will return in September on CNN on Sunday nights and on HBO Max.
Among the original library titles offered on the new hub are 1968: The Year That Changed America, American Dynasties: The Kennedys, American Style, Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown (Seasons 1-12), The Bush Years: Family, Duty, Power,...

When it released Wonder Woman 1984 to its HBO Max servers in December, WarnerMedia made it abundantly clear that it was ready for a new era of movie distribution. Now, in its list of new releases for February 2021, Warner is attempting another grand experiment for HBO Max.
Judas and the Black Messiah premieres on HBO Max this Feb. 12 and is by every indication the kind of film that awards shows go gaga over. Both Daniel Kaluuya and and Lakeith Stanfield look to be at the top of their respective games in this story about Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton and the FBI that wants to take him down. Will this have the same rhetorical oomph on the small screen? Guess we’ll find out!

Time and time again during this year’s pandemic, movie studios have had to make the best of a bad situation. HBO Max’s list of new releases for December 2020 comes along with the most extreme example yet.
WarnerMedia undoubtedly had big plans for Wonder Woman 1984 when it scheduled it for a holiday release last year. After moving it to the summer, however, the conglomerate had to delay its theatrical release time and time again. Now HBO Max is the lucky winner of the saga, as it gets to premiere the long-awaited sequel on its servers on Dec. 25.
While Wonder Woman 1984 is definitely the headline this month, there are some other intriguing streaming options for HBO Max in December. The month plays host to a whole host of high-powered documentaries like Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults (Dec. 3), Alabama Snake (Dec. 9), and the Tiger Woods documentary Tiger (Dec.

Hln is about to shed light on one of TV’s great mysteries.
For nearly a decade, Hln has shown repeats of “Forensic Files,” a catch-the-bad-guy documentary series that hinges on investigators’ ability to find clues in the tiniest details, such as an errant long hair spotted at the murder scene or a small insect found on the victim’s corpse. The series is so popular that the network – a sister outlet to CNN – typically airs 65 to 70 hours of the reruns each week. And yet, for some reason, no one has ever added new episodes to the stack of hundreds that already exist.
Hln has managed to crack the case. After vying with other outlets to get new episodes made, the AT&T-owned network plans to roll out 16 new, half-hour episodes starting in February 2020, according to Ken Jautz, the CNN executive vice president who oversees Hln.

Gibney now has two films that explore the myriad ways that the internet can wreak havoc, with 2013’s “We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks” and the Oscar-shortlisted “Zero Days,” which stemmed from the U.S. and Israeli Stuxnet operation that destroyed 1000 nuclear centrifuges. Initially, producer Marc Shmuger, who brought him both projects, “knew more about it than I did,” said Gibney. “He had access to people telling him interesting things about the Stuxnet operation. Gibney dug deeper and found out how scary the world of cyberwarfare could be. And as the election took its twisty turns, revealing the Russia hacks, more of us caught up with a new reality that had only been imagined in science-fiction. The Matrix is here.

While the promos for CNN’s compelling documentary series Death Row Stories sometimes make it look like just another cheesy true-crime TV show, it’s actually a bit deeper than that. Produced by Robert Redford and Going Clear director Alex Gibney, the show actually has a mission beyond getting ratings: It regularly exposes the deep flaws in a legal system that sometimes seems determined to put suspects to death even when evidence suggests they might be innocent. The greater purpose may be why actor/activist Susan Sarandon will be back as narrator when Death Row Stories begins its second six-episode season Sunday at 10 p.m. Vulture caught up with her Thursday to talk about the the show, as well as the possibility that the death penalty might soon be reversed. We also squeezed in a few questions about her surprisingly busy week in the news — Sarandon spoke up for Ariana Grande...

CNN's original series "Death Row Stories" is set to return to the news channel next Sunday, July 13, with three new episodes debuting on successive Sundays. Executive produced by Jigsaw Production's Alex Gibney ("Taxi to the Dark Side," "The Armstrong Lie") and Sundance Production's Robert Redford and Laura Michalchyshyn, the CNN series focuses on inmates facing the death penalty and the legal process of defending them and attempting to ensure that justice prevails. The new episodes, each narrated by Susan Sarandon, explore three cases from the 1980s and 1990s, two involving double murders and one involving a mass murder in a Chuck E. Cheese in Colorado. Several of the defendants or prosecutors involved in the case are interviewed for the first time, and in the Colorado-centered episode, Gov. John Hickenlooper as well as former Gov. Bill Ritter, Jr. and 2014 gubernatorial candidate Rep. Tom Tancredo are all interviewed. The series's first five.

After working on docu-series at CNN this year, Robert Redford is moving to scripted television with "Homeland" producer Alex Cary. At Sunday's Produced By conference held by the PGA, Cary told the crowd he was working on a TV adaptation of "Brubaker," Redford's 1980 film, with the iconic actor and filmmaker. The original film told the story of a new warden who pretends to be a convict in order to expose corruption at his prison. Directed by Stuart Rosenberg, "Brubaker" starred Redford and Morgan Freeman, earning an Oscar nod for screenwriters W.D. Richter and Arthur A. Ross. Redford has executive-produced many documentaries, including the 2014 CNN series "Chicagoland" and "Death Row Stories," but "Brubaker" would mark his first scripted series. It also marks yet another movie adaptation for television, following the success stories of "Fargo," "About a Boy," "Hannibal," "Parenthood," "Friday Night Lights," and many others.
