Kelly Macdonald: Princess Merida

Quotes

  • [first lines, as Queen Elinor, in her bear form, runs out of the castle, with Merida not too far behind her]

Princess Merida : Och! Where did she go? Mum! Wait! Come back!

  • Princess Merida : [opening narration]  You probably didn't ever expect to see a princess chasin' a bear through the forest. That's fine. I've rarely been accused of acting like a princess. I'm Merida - my father's daughter. That's him. Fergus, the Bear King of DunBroch! He taught me to ride a horse, swing a sword, and shoot a bow. But presidin' over the court: that's my mother's specialty. Queen Elinor, the diplomat. She's always tryin' to teach me to be a "proper princess." She doesn't understand me. She doesn't even try! Och. I wish... I wish she were different.

  • [Elinor outruns Merida once they are deep in the forest]

Princess Merida : I can't keep chasin' her! Och! This is all that Witch's fault!

[the will-o'-the-wisps appear, and Merida spots them and follows them]

Princess Merida : The will-o'-the-wisps! They'll lead me back to the Witch's cottage! Then I can make her change Mum back!

  • Princess Merida : [narrating]  Mum had her own plans for my life. She didn't even care what I wanted! So I ran away. And I found myself at the Witch's cottage. Was it someplace real? Or just because I wanted it to be? I ordered the Witch to give me a spell, demanded it. Ugh! What a fool I was!

  • [Merida follows the will-o'-the-wisps back to the Witch's cottage and confronts her]

Princess Merida : You! You turned my mother into a bear! This is all your fault!

The Crow : My fault! My fault!

The Witch : My fault? Oh, but who am I to refuse the "Future Queen of DunBroch?"

Princess Merida : All right, but... but you tricked me!

The Witch : Tsk. Tsk. All that anger and mistrust, that's what caused this in the first place.

Princess Merida : You caused this!

The Witch : No child, this magic is far older than the spell that changed your mum... Long ago, a terrible bear born of willfulness and mistrust began to stalk these forests...

    The Crow : Mor'duuu!

    Princess Merida : Mor'du?

The Witch : Aye. But the beast lives on. Mor'du is kept alive by anger and selfishness. He still wanders the forest, his cursed spirit corrupting the power of the ancient stones. That corruption has seeped out from the stones, blighting the forest and resurrecting all manner of terrible creatures from ages past. Harpies, mandrakes, spirit wolves! And it's twisted me own magic, too, making the results... unpredictable. Your mother's touched by that magic now. Mor'du's power comes from the very waystones he's corrupted. You must defeat the creatures to cleanse the waystones and turn back the blight!

Princess Merida : Me? Why do I have to do it?

The Witch : Because, ya silly girl, you're the best archer in this kingdom!... Well aren't ya?

Princess Merida : But can I trust ye?

The Witch : [laughs]  Without trust, your mother will be trapped like that forever. Do you want her to end up like Mor'du?

Princess Merida : O' course not! I suppose I've no choice then.

The Witch : Ah! I almost forgot! Here, take this charm; you'll need its help to cleanse the first waystone.

[Merida takes the charm and then runs off to cleanse the waystones]

The Witch : Now go! Quickly! While we were gabbing about, the blight's already spread here, to my own home!

  • Princess Merida : [after cleansing the waystone at the Ring of Stones]  Well, if I can turn this clearin' back to normal, I should be able to restore the rest of this forest. And Mum. Maybe that old witch was tellin' the truth. And that means Mor'du was just here!

  • Princess Merida : [narrating, upon encountering her younger triplet brothers in Forest Grove, who have also been turned into bears]  Boys? Oh, no, ye wee devils! Me brothers - Hamish, Hubert, and Harris. There's nothin' in the entire kingdom they can't get a hold of. Includin' a cursed cake. Ah well, this spell does seem to suit you boys better than poor Mum. Maybe ye can help!

  • [the triplets solve their first puzzle to help Merida on her journey through Forest Grove]

Princess Merida : Well done, boys! Now stay close and...

[the triplets duck out of sight]

Princess Merida : [sighs]  Be careful!

  • Princess Merida : [narrating]  I wished my mother to be different so that I might... change my fate. It was just a wee wish... But I soon found out, there are no wee wishes.

  • [Merida finally catches up to Elinor in Forest Grove]

    Princess Merida : Mum?

[hugs Elinor, then notices a scar on her right leg]

Princess Merida : Oh no, your leg! I can make a salve, like Dad taught me... Don't worry, Mum. These caves will have the yarrow root I need.

  • Princess Merida : [bringing the yarrow root back to heal Elinor's injured right leg in Forest Grove]  Here. This should help your wound.

[the two notice a hoarde of enemies coming their way, as Elinor roars]

Princess Merida : There's just too many of them!

  • [after defeating the horde of enemies in Forest Grove, Elinor runs off, leaving Merida behind]

Princess Merida : Mum! Wait! Come back! That look in her eyes... it isn't even human! Oh! If I can't remove Mor'du's blight... will she ever be my Mum again?

  • [while in the Forest Grove castle, Merida spots both a huge gate and a manhole cover, as the triplets catch up to her]

Princess Merida : Now how am I ever gonna get past...

    [spots her brothers]

Princess Merida : Ah. There you are. Go to it, boys!

[the triplets go down the manhole]

  • Princess Merida : [spotting Mor'du swiping a waystone on Costal Cliffs]  Mor'du's curse is spreading! I've got to stop it!

  • Princess Merida : [encountering Mor'Du at Chilled Creek, who then runs off]  So this won't be gettin' any easier now, will it?

  • Princess Merida : [after cleansing the waystone in the Buried Passage]  The blight... it's receding!

  • [as Merida explores the Swamp of Shadows, Mor'du tries to kill her by pushing a tree on top of her; but Merida notices, quickly rolls, and fires an arrow at Mor'du, which misses, but scares him off]

Princess Merida : Mor'du! You won't frighten me that easily.

  • [Merida makes it to the Swamp of Shadows castle, only to find the front door locked, as well as a manhole cover, just as the triplets arrive on the scene]

Princess Merida : Och, there's no way I'll be able to get past this without...

[notices them, as they pass her to go down the manhole]

Princess Merida : Ah, me brothers! Go to it, lads!

  • Princess Merida : [after cleansing the waystone at Murky Chasm]  Mor'du's curse... it's fadin'!

  • Princess Merida : [narrating, after cleansing the waystone at Frozen Loch, and before heading off for the Ruins of the Ancient Kingdom]  I still remember what the Witch told me when she gave me the spell.

The Witch : Mend the bond, torn by pride.

Princess Merida : [narrating]  Now I understood what she meant by pride. Mum had said I was behaving like a child. An' I called her a... a beast. I never tried to understand her. I only hope it's not too late...

  • [Merida climbs up a ledge inside the Ruins of the Ancient Kingdom, only to be knocked off by Mor'du]

Princess Merida : You've not defeated me, Mor'du! Just a bit farther, and I'll have ended your curse once and for all!

  • [the triplets solve another puzzle to help Merida get past another gate in the Ruins of the Ancient Kingdom]

Princess Merida : I'm very grateful for all ye've done, lads! Now please, promise me you'll be careful. There's an evil in this place.

[the triplets nod in agreement, then head off to hide somewhere]

  • Princess Merida : [after cleansing the waystone in the Ruins of the Ancient Kingdom]  I've done it! I've done it!

  • [Merida is surrounded by a hoarde of enemies in the Ruins of the Ancient Kingdom, but Elinor comes to her rescue]

Princess Merida : Mum! I thought... I thought you'd have changed back by now. But I guess I'm glad you haven't, cause I still need your help!

  • [Merida catches up to Elinor before the final battle]

Princess Merida : Oh, I'm so sorry, Mum. I just... didn't understand ye. I see that now.

[the two spot Mor'du in the distance]

  • Princess Merida : Mor'du!

[Elinor prepares to battle Mor'du's army, but Merida stops her]

Princess Merida : No, Mum. This is MY battle. "Mend the bond, torn by pride." I understand now. It was never just the tapestry, or a magic spell. Pride, selfishness, and anger: those are the things that created Mor'du, it's what's kept him alive for centuries! That means I have to fight him on my own. Not just for Mum, or the boys, or even for our kingdom. I have to do it for myself.

  • Princess Merida : [closing narration]  All that was keepin' Mor'du alive was his curse: his anger and darkness. With the last of those creatures defeated, Mor'du vanished into the wind. His cursed soul released. No, there are no wee wishes. And there are no small battles, either. But the journey was worth it: I defeated Mor'du, I stopped his wicked blight, and I restored the kingdom. But even more than that, I learned there are bonds that should not be so easily torn apart. I'm Merida, and I'm still my father's daughter. But I understand now that I'm my mother's daughter as well. Bravery, battle, adventure. They're nothing without sacrifice, duty, and responsibility. It's a lesson that's served me well as the "Future Queen of DunBroch." But that's a story for another time.
