The comparison thing works better as a standalone film

When I watched the second part of Kirby Ferguson's Everything is a Remix series, I did like the couple of short segments that he did with a few popular films and doing side-by-side comparison of Stars Wars, Kill Bill and The Matrix with scenes or themes from other film which had been borrowed or referenced (depending how you chose to see it). These bits were interesting but in the context of that short film, it didn't have much time to work with it and it ended up showing the most obvious ones and also no adding much to the film – so in essence it felt like it was still introducing the ideas to us in an accessible way, even though we were at the mid-point of the series. So in short I didn't care too much for that second film.

This little side project was created by Robert Wilson off the back of that series as a companion piece and he takes these parts of the second Ferguson film and does a much better job with them. Where Ferguson was using these clips to make a bigger case and discuss a bigger picture, Wilson does not have any such distraction and here he makes a film which is wholly about showing the many, many references and inspirations which were made with Kill Bill, whether they be audible, visual, content, character, dialogue, camera angle or whatever. And where Ferguson had this as a very short part of a very short film, here Wilson has much more time so not only does he present it a better way but he also has more time to do it in.

As a result it is actually pretty interesting because it took no time for me to be out of my depth with references, the easy ones are obvious but then you still have 4 minutes of them to go. I had not realized the extent to which Tarantino had made nods and references to other projects and I really enjoyed this standalone piece for doing it. It also helped that, as with Ferguson's film, it is technically very well put together with sharp editing and very nice presentation of clips. It really can't be fairly compared to Ferguson's series because the two are very different in terms of what they are trying to do, but this side film works very well for what it is trying to do and was really enjoyable – in particular Tarantino fans should watch it with a pen and paper by their side to keep up. Very well presented and engaging little video.
