We’re just two weeks away from the 77th Cannes Film Festival, and this morning the august French institution revealed who will determine the winners of this year’s awards. A cross-section of international talent will join “Barbie” and “Lady Bird” director Greta Gerwig, who will lead the panel, in an effort to undoubtedly compare apples to oranges and try to make sense of a diverse slate of films from directors like David Cronenberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Sean Baker, Ali Abbasi, and many others.
Lily Gladstone, who won several Best Actress awards last year (but not the Oscar!) for her revolutionary turn in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” is the other American joining Gerwig. The actress, currently seen on FX/Hulu’s “Under the Bridge,” is returning to Cannes one year after Martin Scorsese and Apple Original Films brought “Flower Moon” to the French Riviera festival for its out-of-competition debut.

Michael Bay’s influence on the Transformers franchise is undeniable. Since the series’ debut with the 2007 film, Transformers, Bay’s involvement has sparked both praise and dispute among critics and fans. The 2017 film Transformers: The Last Knight, marked the end of his directorial contributions to the franchise.

Five years ago, a serial killer terrorized Chicago. Detective Dan Lawson was assigned to the case but couldn’t bring the killer to justice. It left him a badly damaged man, drinking on the job and obsessed with revenge. Doubly so because one of the victims was his own girlfriend whom he discovered, her head and limbs in the shape of a cross, her torso missing.
In Edinburgh, Detective Glen Boyd finds himself investigating a murder that looks to be the work of the same person. He reaches out to the Chicago Pd, who are only too happy to put Lawson on the next flight to Scotland. Fortunately, there weren’t any motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane.
Things, of course, don’t go well.

What the new generation might have missed about Anthony Hopkins is that before he charmed all the audiences as the MCU’s Odin, he was already stealing the show with his incredible performances, even scoring a couple of Oscars. But here’s the twist, while he’s over the moon about snagging those shiny Academy Awards, what really gets under his skin is what happens next. It’s not that he’s got beef with the award itself. It’s the whole glitz and glamor and the ceremony itself that just rubs him the wrong way.

Academy Award-winning visionary filmmaker Kevin Costner directs New Line Cinema’s vast “Horizon: An American Saga” Chapters One and Two, a multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. A story of America too big for one film, this true cinematic event also stars Costner, who co-writes with Jon Baird (“The Explorers Guild”) and produces through his Territory Pictures.
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, “Horizon: An American Saga” explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s films will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

It’s no wonder that giant studios in the film industry in modern times stick with a star that is guaranteed to give them the most return on their investment in a film project, and again, it’s no wonder why Mark Wahlberg is the top choice for many to be a part of a movie they create. Having one of the cleanest track records when it comes to commercial success in the business, his resume speaks volumes to these production houses.

Following Shia Labeouf’s departure from the Transformers franchise, Mark Wahlberg assumed the lead role in the sci-fi action series, appearing in two films within the franchise. OpenAI has unveiled a generative artificial intelligence tool capable of creating hyper-realistic videos, marking the San Francisco startup’s first major encroachment onto Hollywood.
The system can seemingly produce videos of complex scenes with multiple characters, an array of different types of shots and mostly accurate details of subjects in relation to their backgrounds. A demonstration, rolled out Thursday, touted short videos the company said were generated in minutes in response to a text prompt of just a couple of sentences, though some had inconsistencies. It included a movie trailer of an astronaut traversing a desert planet and an animated scene of an expressive creature kneeling beside a melting red candle with shadows drifting in the background.

2024 is going to be light on superhero movies (relatively speaking) but comic book cinema will be present on the big screen on Valentine's Day. Sony's latest "Spider-Man" spin-off movie "Madame Web" is hitting theaters, introducing several brand new spider-heroes into the ever-growing Marvel multiverse.
Following in the footsteps of movies like "Venom" and "Morbius," as well as this year's "Kraven the Hunter," Sony is once again making the most of the Marvel Comics characters it has the rights to in the larger "Spider-Man" franchise. Specifically, it sees Dakota Johnson bring Cassandra Web, aka Madame Webb, to life alongside an impressive supporting cast.
But is this a one-and-done? Or is the studio setting up more for the future? We're going to discuss the movie's post-credits scene situation in spoiler-free fashion. Seriously, we're not going to spoil anything. We're just here to arm you with information so you can be ready on opening weekend.

The "Jurassic World" franchise is simply too big to go extinct. We recently learned that not only is Universal Pictures developing a seventh entry in the long-running dinosaur franchise, but the movie is set to hit theaters next summer. Yes, assuming the release date holds, we'll be seated for a new blockbuster in which humans and dinos try to co-exist in just over a year. For the moment, the studio is remaining very tight-lipped about the film, which opens the door for us to speculate wildly. That's precisely what we're going to do, while not going too off the rails with unfounded theorizing.
Rather, as a self-proclaimed super-fan of the franchise, I am going to take you, dear reader, through the options that can reasonably be considered, broadly speaking, following 2022's "Jurassic World Dominion." We're going to go over each broad possibility, as well as the pros and cons of each approach.

Just like with almost every other 2024 film, I didn’t know much about The Tiger’s Apprentice. In fact, besides the fact that it had a tiger, I really didn’t know anything else about it. Therefore, I was surprised to see a cast boasting the likes of Henry Golding (The Gentlemen), Lucy Liu (Shazam! Fury of the Gods), Sandra Oh (Quiz Lady), and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), as well as talented screenwriters like David Magee (The Little Mermaid) and Christopher Yost (Thor: Ragnarok). Director Raman Hui (Monster Hunt) was the ‘wildcard’ I was unfamiliar with, so overall, I held no expectations whatsoever.
The Tiger’s Apprentice follows the well-covered, formulaic path of a young protagonist discovering a family secret and bearing it against some sort of antagonist. In this particular case, Tom (Brandon Soo Hoo), a Chinese American boy living in San Francisco, is the latest in a...

Last year, Hollywood took stock of the potential — and dangers — of generative artificial intelligence. As use of the human-mimicking chatbots evolved into a sticking point in the strikes, creators took to the courts, accusing AI firms of mass-scale copyright infringement after their works were allegedly used as training materials. In the backdrop of these legal volleys, a question stands out: Why haven’t any major studios sued to protect their intellectual property like other rights holders?
One answer involves the possibility that they’re still negotiating with AI companies, with the aim of striking a licensing deal. A grimmer scenario involves the potential that they want to harness the tools for themselves to cut labor costs. Another involves the possibility that they’re biding their time to compile evidence and keep an eye on how the other cases are progressing.
Studios could now have some of the proof they need to get off the sidelines,...

"Transformers" has been a staple in pop culture for going on 40 years now. From the somewhat humble beginnings as a bunch of transforming toys turned popular cartoon series to eventually becoming a multi-billion-dollar film franchise, Optimus Prime and the gang have come a long way. The “Transformers” franchise returned to theaters in 2023 with “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” the latest installment in the big-screen, live-action adaptation of the beloved Hasbro toy line. “Rise of the Beasts,” which is the planned start of a new trilogy, is the seventh film in the series. Chronologically, it comes after “Bumblebee,” which was a prequel to the first five films in the series. This means you don’t technically have to watch or rewatch any of the Michael Bay-helmed movies before — but don’t you kind of want to anyway?
In case you forgot, Michael Bay was behind the camera for “Transformers” (2007), “Revenge of the Fallen” (2009), “Dark of the Moon” (2011), “Age of Extinction” (2014), and “The Last Knight” (2017). Actor Mark Wahlberg has been a part of Hollywood for a very long time, even becoming somewhat of a meme due to his way of speaking. Thinking about his own future in the industry now, the actor is making it seem bleak, even saying that he doesn’t think he will be acting in Hollywood for too long.
‘The Departed’ actor in a session with ‘Cigar Aficionado’ magazine, opened about his past, present and future business pursuits. Notably, the 52-year-old star has questioned his longevity in the industry, wondering just how much longer he can stand in front of cameras, as per ‘The Hollywood Reporter’.
“Well, I’m certainly working harder now than ever. Certain businesses, you kind of build them, pass them on or you exit. Hopefully my kids, we’ll see what their interests are, but I don’t think that I’ll be acting that much longer...

For years, the live-action "Transformers" movie franchise's box office numbers appeared to have a reverse correlation with Rotten Tomatoes scores: the more scathing reviews a "Transformers" movie got, the more tickets it would sell. This was held up as proof that (depending on your perspective) either snooty film critics are out of touch with modern moviegoers, or modern moviegoers will watch any old trash as long as it's loud and action-heavy and has characters they recognize.
Neither of these conclusions are really fair. Director Michael Bay, for all his faults, does a great explosion and also perfected the art of the 360 spinning hero shot. Sometimes the world needs a loud movie with robots that will entertain kids who aren't really paying attention to the plot. And film critics can love trash just as much as the next person. Even The New Yorker, a publication so snooty that its mascot is...

If it’s true that youth is wasted on the young, then so are friendly aliens.
Sure, the kids in E.T. had a great time with their pint-sized buddy from another planet, and so have countless other children in family-themed sci-fi films over the years. But it’s about time that seniors get in on the fun, and there’s plenty of it in Marc Turtletaub’s whimsical sci-fi dramedy that’s as much about the burdens and loneliness of old age as it is about extraterrestrial bonding. Featuring sterling performances from an uncharacteristically underplaying Ben Kingsley alongside Harriet Sansom Harris and Jane Curtin, Jules emerges as a low-key delight.
Set in the sort of western Pennsylvanian town that has clearly seen better days, the story revolves around 78-year-old Milton (Kingsley), who lives alone and whose early signs of dementia are made evident by his repeated verbatim requests at...

The first "eureka moment" in recorded history occurred when Archimedes, upon immersing himself in a bathtub, finally understood the concept of water displacement. It was not a discovery per se (the phenomenon had been there every time he went for a soak), but, for whatever reason, this time the light went on, and my man allegedly streaked nude through the streets of Syracuse proclaiming his discovery.
Since then, the term "eureka moment" has been used to describe everything from mind-blowing scientific revelations to unearthing a motherlode of gold — epochal occasions for the planet or an individual. Something so wild you're compelled to yell some nonsense like "Eureka!"
I would not consider, "Hey, let's put G.I. Joe and the Transformers in the same movie" to be anywhere in the atom-splitting ballpark of a "eureka moment." Especially when your studio owns the rights to both franchises, and, well, every kid who...

“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” is coming to Paramount+ this week.
The streamer announced the action- and visual effects-packed film will be available to stream on the service beginning Tuesday, July 25 in the United States and Canada. The film’s availability in additional international Paramount+ markets will be announced at a later date.
The seventh installment of the hit Paramount Pictures film franchise opened atop the domestic box office back in June and has grossed over $420 million worldwide.
Returning to the action and spectacle that have captured moviegoers around the world, the film takes audiences on a ‘90s globetrotting adventure with the Autobots and introduces a whole new faction of Transformer – the Maximals – to join them as allies in the existing battle for earth against the Terrorcons.
While “Rise of the Beasts” is the newest Transformers film, it actually takes place before most of its predecessors in terms of storyline.

Writer-director and DC Studios co-chief James Gunn continues rolling the ball with brand new cast additions in Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced and Edi Gathegi for ‘Superman: Legacy.’
Fillion (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”) will play Guy Gardner, one of the figures known as Green Lantern, he will be just one of several people in the new DC Universe to wear the emerald ring that imbues its wearer with the powers of the Green Lantern; Merced (“Dora and the Lost City of Gold”) will play Hawkgirl, one of DC’s oldest superheroes, who first appeared in 1940; and Gathegi (“X-Men: First Class”) will play Mister Terrific aka Michael Holt, an ingenious inventor who operates as Mister Terrific with the multipurpose, mechanical “T-Spheres” he created.
Gunn had already announced that he had cast David Corenswet (“Hollywood”) as the Man of Steel, alongside ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

Regardless of what you might think about James Gunn, there’s no denying that he’s really come a long way since he directed 2014’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ Back then, he was an unknown filmmaker who was promising a lot thanks to his first superhero movie.
Now, nine years, three ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movies, and two DC projects (‘The Suicide Squad’ and ‘Peacemaker’) later, he’s the co-ceo of DC Studios, working on the upcoming reboot of Dceu, officially called Dcu. And what’s even more important, he officially signed to write and direct ‘Superman: Legacy,’ the movie that will officially kick off Dcu in exactly two years!
Gunn likes to give his followers on social media constant teases about the project’s development, and although the plot is being kept under wraps, we still know a handful of things. We know that the movie won’t depict Clark Kent’s origin story,...

The total U.K. and Ireland box office for June 2023 was £90.3 million ($114.8 million), 28% lower than June 2022, according to numbers released by Comscore.
Year-to-date 2023 is currently running 7% behind the same period in 2022, the numbers reveal.
The territory is very much weather-driven and June 2023 was the hottest June since records began, per the U.K. Met Office, meaning that potential cinema audiences spent a larger proportion of their leisure time outdoors.
June’s highest-grossing film was Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” with £26.7 million, which comfortably surpassed the lifetime total of its predecessor, “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse” (£10.8 million). The animated sequel is currently the third-biggest release of the year so far.
Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” occupied second position with £25.4 million and is the fifth-biggest release of the year so far, and is poised to cross “Puss In Boots: The Last Wish” (£25.8 million).

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is the latest big Hollywood movie to bomb in China, earning just $2.3 million over its opening weekend. It comes on the heels of “The Flash” earning just $25 million since opening three weekends ago as well as “The Little Mermaid” earning just $3.7 million after a month in theaters.
Like “Solo: A Star Wars Story” in 2018, it would appear that “Indiana Jones 5” was a domestic-skewing IP sell, especially with the brand mostly dormant since “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” in 2008, with a less-than-hoped overseas appeal. None of the previous “Indiana Jones” films played in China, which means there’s no generational nostalgia for the brand or Harrison Ford’s marquee character.
It’s one more costly example of how Chinese audiences are showing a preference for homegrown movies over Hollywood tentpoles, a conundrum for studios that spent the 2010s counting on China as a growth market.

Audiences are making it clear which superhero film they prefer at the box office right now, as Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has returned to the No. 1 spot in its fourth weekend in theaters while Warner Bros.’ “The Flash” has suffered a 72% second-weekend drop, the worst for the soon-to-be-finished DC Extended Universe.
“Across the Spider-Verse” earned $19.3 million this weekend, continuing its strong run as it passed $500 million in global grosses earlier this past week. With $317 million grossed domestically and over $525 million worldwide, “Across the Spider-Verse” is on the doorstep of passing the $563.7 million global total of the 2011 live-action/CGI hybrid “The Smurfs” and becoming Sony Pictures Animation’s highest-grossing movie ever.
“The Flash,” meanwhile, has collapsed from its $55 million opening to $15.3 million, suffering a second-weekend drop worse than that of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” which had much more room to fall from its $106 million opening, and the 70% drop...

Leakers went on the hunt today after Sony teased the arrival of the first official trailer for its upcoming Marvel film Kraven the Hunter. Initially, the trailer was supposed to drop tomorrow, but the internet waits for no one. Sony’s Kraven the Hunter red band trailer is out in the wild, showcasing a brutal look at Aaron Talyor-Johnson’s next superhero-related role as Sergei Kravinoff, aka Kraven the Hunter.
Sony’s Kraven the Hunter stars Aaron Taylor Johnson as Sergei Kravinoff, Spider-Man’s number-one rival. During a chat with Variety, Taylor-Johnson said his version of the character would be a significant departure from the comics. He went on to say that he is “not an alien or a wizard. He’s just a hunter, a human with conviction.” The following description baffles some fans as Taylor-Johnson confirms that Kraven is “an animal lover and protector of the natural world in the movie.

Both Warner Bros./DC’s “The Flash” and Disney/Pixar’s “Elemental” are off to poor starts at the box office, with “Flash” suffering an estimated $55 million three-day/$64 million four-day opening from 4,234 theaters, while “Elemental” is sliding to a $29.5 million three-day/$33 million four-day start from 4,035 theaters.
“The Flash” grossed just $15.5 million on Saturday, representing only a 5% increase from its true Friday gross of $14.6 million (not counting $9.7 million in previews). Friday’s industry estimates had predicted an $18-19 million Saturday total, but walk-up ticket sales are dropping below expectations amidst the film’s tepid word of mouth, which includes a B on CinemaScore and an 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Both of those audience metrics are below what was received for “Black Adam,” a DC film that opened to $67 million domestic and $140 million worldwide last fall and which “The Flash” had long been expected to top. “Black Adam” grossed just $393 million...

Industry estimates have the 3-day opening for “Flash” at $61 million, which would be identical to what Paramount’s “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” opened to last weekend. But both figures are below the $67 million 3-day/$71.5 million 4-day opening earned last fall by fellow DC film “Black Adam,” which ended up grossing only $393 million worldwide against a $200 million-plus production budget before marketing.
“The Flash,” which has been reported to be at the same budget level, was expected to do better given its mid-June release slot and other factors such as the return of Michael Keaton as Batman, which was seen as a potential selling point...

Friday Afternoon: Industry estimates show that Andy Muschietti’s The Flash from Warner Bros’ DC is heading for a Friday around $26M, which will yield a 3-day around $64M, and 4-day north of $72M+ at 4,234 theaters. The day is still young, though one thing about last night was how male-heavy Flash was at 74%. To some degree these figures are not surprising as this is where the box office openings of deep universe superhero movies live when they’re starting off a franchise.
Second place at 4,035 is Disney/Pixar’s Elemental with $11M today, a 3-day of $33M, and 4-day of $36M. Yikes, let’s hope it gets better.
The good news is that holdovers remain very strong to the point where six films alone right now are amounting to $168M for the weekend ($184.4M over the 4-day Juneteenth holiday). Sony Animation’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse booked at 3,873 theaters is...

“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” enjoyed a $38.9 million (RMB276 million) opening weekend in mainland China. The score was comfortably the biggest by any film between Friday and Sunday and the second biggest opening by a Hollywood film this year in the territory.
Data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway suggests that the film accounted for some 63% of China’s nationwide gross box office over the weekend.
Giant screen systems provider, Imax reported that the film earned $5.9 million of the total from its screen network in China, or some 15% of the China total.
Fan reactions, according to scores tallied by online sources, were very solid. Users of the Maoyan and Taopiaopiao ticketing platforms gave “Rise of the Beasts” a 9.1 out of ten rating. Those on the more high-brow Douyin review site, assessed it as a more middling 6.3.

It looks like Paramount/Skydance’s “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” will stave off a challenge from Sony Animation’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” for the top box office spot, earning a $60.5 million opening weekend from 3,678 theaters.
Comparisons to recent “Transformers” installments aren’t exact, as “Transformers: The Last Knight” opened on a Wednesday and took in a $68.4 million 5-day opening with $44.6 million earned between Friday and Sunday. Globally, the film has earned a $170.5 million launch compared to $267 million for “The Last Knight,” a drop that can be largely attributed to China, where “Rise of the Beasts” opened to just $40 million compared to $125 million for “Last Knight,” continuing the trend of declining interest in Hollywood films among Chinese audiences.
But “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” is beating pre-release projections of a $50-55 million domestic opening, and insiders at Paramount say the studio sees these numbers as a good start as...

In a decisive win for the Autobots after being stuck on autopilot for years, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts opened to a promising $60.5 million at the domestic box office, more than enough to topple popular holdover Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and win the crowded summer weekend.
Rise of the Beasts — which successfully revives the Hasbro toy-to-movie franchise after several fits and starts — landed on the high end of expectations. While reviews have been mixed, the Paramount and Skydance pic earned an A- CinemaScore from audiences and excellent PostTrak scores.
Younger adults made up the majority of ticket buyers, with 56 percent between ages 18-34, including 34 percent between 18-24, according to PostTrak. The male-skewing film is playing to an ethnically diverse audience (Latino, 32 percent; white, 31 percent; Black, 21 percent; and Asian/Other, 16 percent).
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts also did sizeable business overseas, earning $110 million for an early global roar of $170.5 million.

Autobots – roll out. The Transformers franchise has been a staple in pop-culture ever since their creation as toys back in the 1980s. However, the concept of massive living creatures turning into everyday machines and living secretly amongst humans was so compelling and unique that it warranted much more than just action figures. Followed by tv shows, graphic novels, and multiple spinoffs the Transformers universe quickly became one of the largest established I.P. in the history of media. And of course, that means Hollywood came knocking. But, not all entries have been great, as we’ll dig into with our Transformers Movies Ranked list!

The summer season has its first genuine battle for top of the heap, as “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” looks to fend off last week’s top release “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
“Rise of the Beasts” put its foot on the gas with $25 million on its opening day, a figure that includes $8.8 million in Thursday previews. The film is projected to land near a $60 million opening through the three-day frame, which would land at the higher end of estimates heading into the weekend.
Once a box office juggernaut, Paramount has attempted to reengineer the “Transformers” franchise for future longevity. The first three entries, directed by Michael Bay, each crossed $300 million in North American grosses, while threequel “Dark of the Moon” and its follow-up “Age of Extinction” both surpassed $1 billion worldwide. But Bay’s final production, 2017’s “Transformers: The Last Knight,” saw diminished returns, finishing with $130 million stateside and $605 million worldwide...

The survival of the fittest theory is more applicable to the world of Cybertronians than it is to us Terrans. Divided into factions, warfare follows the denizens of Cybertron all their lives and reaches any part of the cosmos where they seek refuge as well. Previously, while the pentalogy of Bayverse movies primarily focused on the conflict between two major factions, namely the noble, honorable Autobots and the evil, treacherous Decepticons (Dinobots and Constructicons appeared too with bare minimum focus), the second movie of the prequel series Transformers: Rise of the Beasts introduces an additional three factions into the mix. The introduction of Maximals, Terrorcons, and Predacons is surely going to please longtime Transformers fans, who will be eager to know how the characters compare in power scaling. We will like to provide a brief overview of the Transformers that have appeared in Rise of the Beasts and will try...
