So bad it could actually scare you...
paul_haakonsen6 July 2018
Right, well beforehand on sitting down to watch "Potent Media's Sugar Skull Girls" I had never heard about it. I saw the DVD cover and knew that this was going to be a children's movie, for sure. But I still decided to sit down and watch it, because it could happen that I had been missing out on something spectacular.

I hadn't!

"Potent Media's Sugar Skull Girls" was certainly a children's Halloween movie in every meaning of the phrase. So it might actually be a fun enough movie for the right young audience to be watching for a Halloween frightfest. Except that the movie, of course, isn't scary!

The movie was horribly weighed down by equally horrible acting performances, and they were topped off by equally bad dialogue. Who writes stuff like that, but more importantly why isn't anyone taking notice and raises a hand and suggests alterations?

This movie just hardly seems worth the time or effort. And if you are looking for some Halloween movie for the youngsters, then there are far better choices available.

Juvenile indie

Warning: Spoilers
SUGAR SKULL GIRLS is a cheesy indie fantasy action spoof movie aimed at juvenile viewers. The heroes of the film are a trio of sisters who are raised from the dead during a ritual and who subsequently must evade the clutches of a witch who has designs on them. This is an intentionally laughable film chock full of cheesy CGI effects and general assorted craziness. There are two cameos in the form of older horror actors Michael Berryman (of THE HILLS HAVE EYES fame) and John Amplas (the George Romero stalwart) .

Awful.

This is the crap you end up with when an amateur video movie TRIES to be funny. Cartoon sound effects when someone notices something??? People looking at each other, as the "joke". Its just TERRIBLE. A child could direct better than this. Was it a child who directed it? Was this it aimed at children? It didn't say, but that's how it seemed. Starts with a trailer trash guy, waiting for a witch, to summon a spirit of some girl. The plot is not really explained that well, but the "witch" turns up with a semi dwarf... who has to be handed everything, to excuse him being in the scene. Its (all) just AWFUL. If it was some sort of tax write off, one would understand it. Compare it to another movie? OK, its WORSE than the brain numbing "Police Academy" movies, and that says it all.

A nice "halloweeny" movie for 8 - 12yo's

A fun movie with that halloween vibe for 8 - 12yo's, especially girls - my daughter liked it a lot.

Nice lo-budget film, decent effects and it's fun to watch.

With a bigger budget, who knows - a future Disney channel TV-series? Would work I think. A fun idea someone had.

Tokusatsu for the kids
tattoopig29 August 2017
A "Tokusatsu" film is a Japanese genre, such as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. It is filled with over the top imagery, puppet creatures, characters growing in size, etc. And yes. it is aimed at kids! This is a great Tokusatsu-inspired movie that will appeal to the 10 - 15 age group. The characters are sassy, the one liners are cute and funny, the story is exciting and the puppet-monsters are quite creepy.

If you understand that this film is NOT aimed at adults, you'll actually have a lot of fun watching it. It's a great way to introduce your kids to movies involving monsters and magic and villains...and I promise that you'll get as much of a kick out of this film as they do!
