Consider the dilemma of the great actors from the British Isles. Stage-trained, versatile and geared toward the classics and the experimental, these days they must commit to some big Hollywood fantasy franchise — Harry Potter, Super-something-or-other — or find their careers forever relegated to a Downton Abbey TV knockoff.
Ireland-raised Michael Fassbender is a case study of such a situation. Highly praised for his challenging work in director Steve McQueen’s Hunger, Shame and 12 Years a Slave, Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method and the Aaron Sorkin talkathon Steve Jobs, the actor stays in demand by bringing the same passionate, cerebral commitment to the X-Men film franchise and Ridley Scott’s revived Alien encounters.

Bill Murray starrer St. Vincent will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of this week’s wave of programming that includes Discovery.
The Discovery section includes the upcoming world premiere of Stories Of Our Lives, a portmanteau of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex testimonies by anonymous filmmakers from Kenya.
Selections include first-looks of Ross Katz’s Us comedy Adult Beginners, Sarah Leonor’s French Legion drama The Great Man, Isidora Marras’ Chile-Argentinian psychothriller I Am Not Lorena and UK drama X + Y.

Briefly: If you somehow missed the big news, Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave just won Best Picture at the 86th Academy Awards this past weekend. As expected, Fox Searchlight is banking on all the awards buzz (since it also won at the BAFTAs, the Indie Spirits, and Golden Globes) and re-releasing the film in theaters this weekend. EW.com (via The Film Stage) reports that 12 Years a Slave will be re-released in over 1,000 theaters this weekend, likely being pushed as the Best Picture winner. The film has already made $50 million at the box office and is out on DVD/Blu-ray, but it still worth seeing in theaters. In addition to Best Picture, actress Lupita Nyong'o won Best Supporting Actress, and I was rooting for Chiwetel Ejiofor, too. Check your local listings to see if 12 Years a Slave is playing in a theater near you. In total, Steve McQueen's...

Sidney Poitier returned to the Oscar stage Sunday night to present the award for Best Director alongside Angelina Jolie, five decades after he made history by becoming the first African-American man to win an Oscar.
Poitier appeared on stage looking as regal as ever at the age of 87. He received a well-deserved standing ovation from the crowd. Poitier had some words of wisdom to give to the nominees and audience members, saying, “It is my pleasure to be here in such inspiring company, to help celebrate all the extraordinary talent represented tonight. It’s encouraging and invigorating. Please, keep up the wonderful work.”

Everyone's got an opinion when it comes to the Oscars, unfortunately most people's are negative, censored or ridiculous
Oscars predictions are to Los Angeles what political gossip is to Washington DC, and during the week of the Oscars it's pretty much impossible to walk down the street, let alone open a newspaper, without somebody giving you their tuppence on the matter. As with arseholes and opinions, everyone's got their own prediction but in the final days before the ceremony one verdict was becoming increasingly loud: Gravity will beat 12 Years a Slave to Best Picture. Why? Because a true story about slavery is, well, kind of a downer.
"For many, 12 Years a Slave is too hard to watch," declared a front page headline in the La Times above a story by the paper's film critic, Betsy Sharkey, suggesting audiences have shied away from the movie. But a brief glance at the...
